What Are the Unique Mental Health Challenges and Effects of the Coronavirus Pandemic?
How is the coronavirus pandemic truly affecting children’s mental health?
The COVID-19 pandemic has had tremendous impact on children and adolescents’ mental health. Among teens, rates of depression and anxiety have doubled, and suicidal ideation has increased. This had led experts, including Children’s Hospital Colorado leaders, to declare a youth mental health crisis.
In this video, clinical child and adolescent psychologist Jessica Hawks, MD, describes the unique effects the COVID-19 pandemic has had on children and adolescents’ mental health. COVID-19 has disrupted routines, increased stress, created social isolation from friends and family and brought grief.
“So, when you think about all those challenges, it should come as no surprise that mental health has been impacted,” says Dr. Hawks.
