How to Identify When Your Kid is Having Mental Health Issues
“The first thing parents need to know is how to be able to effectively identify when your child might be having mental health difficulties,” says Dr. Jessica Hawks, clinical child and adolescent psychologist.
Children and adolescents’ mental health has been seriously impacted during the COVID-19 pandemic, and it’s important to know how warning signs for mental health issues may look different than they do in adults.
Dr. Hawks explains that unlike the sadness we often see in adults with depression, irritability is a red flag when it comes to children’s mental health. Although it’s common for teens to spend more time in their room or have mood swings, it’s important to check-in and make sure those behaviors aren’t contributing to a mental health struggle. In this video, you’ll learn about other warning signs to look out for and how to tell what are normal behavioral changes and what might signal a more serious problem.
