Physical Therapy after Spine Surgery

It’s important to know what to expect after spine surgery, especially when it comes to physical therapy. The day after surgery, you will meet your physical therapist (PT) and get right to work. First, you’ll learn how to log roll safely onto your side and stand up properly, and then how to sit in a chair and even go for a walk by the afternoon.

Your PT will work with you in the hospital until you are able to get out of bed, walk around the unit and move up and down stairs with minimal assistance. After you are home, PT visits are not required. However, a lot of walking is required to reduce pain and strengthen core muscles, along with stretching for sore muscles and shoulder pain. Around four to six weeks after surgery, you will start core exercises, and in time, you’ll be cleared by your surgeon to start sports and other activities again.
