Congenital Heart Disease: Day to Day Life in the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit

Babies with congenital heart disease usually need care in a cardiac intensive care unit (CICU) soon after birth. The CICU is a busy place, but understanding day-to-day life in the CICU can make things easier.
In the CICU, a large team of specialists works together to provide expert, 24/7 care for your child. A key part of this care is daily rounding. During morning CICU rounding, we come to your child’s bedside and determine your child’s care plan for the day. We share this plan with you and encourage you to ask questions.
Each night, our team performs a final round for the day. This is a check-in time to ensure that your child’s care plan is working well.
You don’t have to wait for rounds to speak to your child’s medical team, however. We’re available anytime you have questions or concerns. And if you need extra support, our social workers, chaplains and child life specialists are here for you.
