Congenital Heart Disease: Transitioning to the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit
If your newborn has congenital heart disease, they will need care in a pediatric cardiac intensive care unit (CICU) after birth. The CICU team at Children’s Hospital Colorado is highly experienced in caring for babies with congenital heart conditions.
We understand that having a newborn with special healthcare needs can be stressful, so we make your baby’s transition to the CICU as seamless as possible. When your baby first arrives in the CICU, we perform an echocardiogram (painless ultrasound imaging of the heart) to confirm your baby’s diagnosis. We will also connect several monitors to your baby and explain the purpose of each one. You receive regular updates on your baby’s health, and we’re always available if you have questions.
Once your baby is settled in the CICU and medically safe, you can spend time together and bond. Our staff is available to help you with breastfeeding, bottle feeding and safe positions for holding your baby. We provide a pull-out couch in your baby’s room so you can remain at their bedside 24/7 if you choose. You also have access to nearby quiet rooms for more uninterrupted sleep when you need it.
