Review: Slim Molto Vibrator Is Ideal for Beginners

There are times when it is kosher for your eyes to be bigger than your belly—during Thanksgiving dinner or at a Michelin star restaurant, for example. However, you never want your eyes to be bigger than your ass hole. Trying to insert something into your bum that is girthier than your bum can comfortably accept is the fastest way to cock-block your anal experience from pleasure, and replace that potential with pain. (Not ideal for anyone looking for enjoyable anal sex or an anal orgasm!) Instead, it’s better to err on the side of smallness with an anal sex toy, if there’s any doubt, and go for something like the ultra-thin MysteryVibe Molto vibrator ($125), which was released in fall 2023, sold out, and is now available for preorder again.

Made out of body-safe, silky-smooth silicone, Molto is an ultra-thin vibrator designed with both vaginal and anal play in mind. The finger-thick shaft of the toy features a posable core, allowing you to bend the wand to best target your internal pleasure zones, including the G-zone, prostate, or cervix (C-spot).

Molto’s slim-profile design is what sets it apart from many of the anal plugs, anal beads, prostate massagers, and anal-safe dildos on the market that assume all anal-sex-havers are size queens. No doubt, bigger toys can be a great way to experience a pleasurable sensation of fullness, says certified sex therapist Gigi Engle, ACS, CSE, CSC. But for anal sex beginners, these toys aren’t just intimidating; they’re dangerous. Try to use something too big, too soon, and you can create micro-tears in the delicate anal lining, increasing your risk of sexually transmitted infections, as well as hemorrhoids and anal fissures, she says.

Not to mention the pain of anal play with a too-big toy—which the body will remember. If you have a painful first anal experience, you are more likely to have a painful second anal experience (and so forth). That’s because the memory of the pain can cause you to subconsciously clench your pelvic floor and anal sphincter muscles, which will make the anal opening tighter, thus setting you up for pain with penetration.

It’s for these reasons that, as both a sex educator who regularly writes on the benefits of anal exploration and a pleasure-seeker myself, I was thrilled to learn about the release of Molto from MysteryVibe (the brand behind my favorite travel-friendly vibrator Poco, no less). After using Molto both vaginally and anally, as well as with a partner, I am happy to report that this one-finger-thick vibrator helps fill the size gap in the anal sex toy market and offers an ideal option for vaginal and anal play beginners.

My experience with the ultra-slim Molto vibrator

“Try anything twice” is the sexual ethos I live by. Unfortunately, my body isn’t always quite down for all of the penetrative sex acts my brain, heart, and libido want me to be able to try.

As it goes, I have something called a hypertonic pelvic floor. The comedian in me loves to say that means I have been diagnosed with a “gorilla grip coochie.” But what it really means is that my pelvic floor muscles are so tight that it takes a lot of TLC (see: vaginal dilators, breathing exercises, anxiety medications, and partner patience) for either my vaginal or anal canal to “open” enough for me to be able to accept the toys or body parts I desire to.

Lucky for me and my tight pelvic floor, the first thing I noticed when I took Molto out of the box is that it is as skinny as the marketing claims. With a girth about the size of one finger, it’s well within the size range of toys that I can accept without much prep or patience. My first thought was, “This is perfect for quickies,” and it proved to be exactly that.

One day, I had exactly 13 minutes between when I finished writing my last article of the day and when I needed to leave for an appointment, so I decided to experiment with Molto. (For background, I usually take up to 60 minutes to finish during a midday masturbation break, so this would be quite the quickie.)

It was only a few minutes before I was making the kind of monkey noises I made the first time my partner found my G-zone.

I was already pretty aroused after an all-day sexting session with my long-distance boo, so I got right to it. I locked my dog out of the room, put on my birthday suit, and within moments was teasing my vulva with the surprisingly rumbly vibrations of Molto. Then, after adding a dab of lube and doing a bit of box breathing, I molded Molto into a curved shape and slid the digit-shaped device inside me. It was only a few minutes before I was making the kind of monkey noises I made the first time my partner found my G-zone. I found my clit with my free hand, and a blended orgasm followed shortly thereafter. Time to completion: seven minutes.

Since my first experience with Molto, I’ve used the toy three additional times—each with the same whammo-bammo results. (While I haven’t yet tried the toy on a play partner’s ass, I certainly plan to propose the idea to whatever peach-play-loving sweetheart I bed next.)

Why to try the Molto vibrator

To be absolutely clear: You do not have to have a pelvic floor dysfunction to enjoy Molto! People of all anatomies and genders can use and enjoy it. “The ultra-thin, ultra-flexible shape of the vibrator allows it to adapt to different body shapes and anatomies and makes it ideal for targeting multiple different erogenous zones, including those in the vaginal and anal canal,” says Soumyadip Rakshit, PhD, co-founder and CEO of MysteryVibe, who holds a doctorate degree in electronic and electrical engineering.

In particular, using Molto for vaginal play can be a great way to experiment with less intensive or deep vaginal penetration, says Dr. Rakshit. In addition to folks with hypertonic pelvic floors, this could be appealing to people who are brand new to vaginal play, as well as those who are new to vaginal penetration with a toy.

Additionally, the slim profile of Molto can allow people of all genders and body types to explore the wonderful world of anal play. The anal-safe vibrator can be used to stimulate the nerve-dense anal opening and anal canal or to experience a sensation of fullness. For vulva-owners, such anal penetration can also help indirectly put pressure on and stimulate the G-zone, which is located inside the vagina on just the other side of the anal canal.

Pleasure aside, the use of a toy like Molto for anal stimulation (versus a body part, like a finger) can help relieve anxiety for those who may be afraid of a poop appearance, says sex educator Tatyannah King. “Often, people who are concerned about a potential poop accident are less distressed by the thought of getting poop residue on a toy than about getting it on their own hand or a partner’s hand or penis,” she says. (For the record: The risk of poop during peach play is probably much lower than you think.)

When paired with vaginal penetration, anal penetration can also lead to double the pleasure. (This is often known as double penetration, or DP). Not to mention, the small size of Molto also makes it the perfect toy to use for experimenting with double vaginal penetration, or penetrating the vagina with two toys and/or body parts at once.

Meanwhile, for people with a penis, anal penetration can lead to stimulation of the prostate, a gland located a few inches inside the anus, near the bladder, says Engle. “About the size of a walnut, its main function is to produce prostate fluid, one of the two main components in semen,” she says. But when it is touched—sometimes known as giving a prostate massage, or prostate “milking”—it can feel extremely pleasurable. In some individuals, this kind of stimulation can even lead to more powerful ejaculations, as well as a totally different type of orgasm known as the prostate orgasm, says Engle.

How to get the most out of your sexperience with Molto

As far as sex toys go, Molto is pretty darn easy to use. The buttons are intuitive, the shape is easy to customize, and charging the toy is as simple as charging your phone. Still, here are some tips for making your (and/or your partner’s) experience with the toy as pleasurable as possible.

1. Get to know the product

Before you use any toy for the first time, it’s wise to spend a little bit of time getting to know it. After all, it’d be pretty frustrating to press the “off” button when you’re seconds away from orgasm and meant to press the “+” button. Dr. Rakshit recommends flipping through the instruction manual to learn what each button does before using the toy.

2. Use a water- or oil-based lubricant

Whether you’re planning to use the toy in a hole that can self-lubricate (like the vaginal canal) or cannot (like the anal canal), King recommends adding in some store-bought lubricant. Lube, she explains, helps increase pleasure that can accompany penetration by decreasing the friction of silicone on skin. “It’s especially essential to use an ample amount of lube whenever inserting fingers, penises, toys, or anything else inside your butt,” she says. In addition to increasing pleasure, it will help reduce the risk of skin tears, and therefore infection and hemorrhoids.

Just be sure not to use a lube with numbing ingredients. “Those will prevent you from feeling your body’s warning signs that you’re in pain,” says King. Molto is made of silicone, so you’ll also want to stick with water-based or oil-based lubricant. Silicone sticks to itself, she explains, so using a silicone-based lubricant with a silicone toy can distort the shape of the toy or degrade it over time.

3. Move slowly

If you’re using Molto anally, in particular, slow and steady will win the race. Going about three times more slowly than you think you need to (yes, really) will give your anal sphincter muscles time to relax, which is an essential step for accepting anything into your bum, says King.

Such relaxation, she adds, can be bolstered through a combination of breathing exercises, external anal stimulation techniques (like analingus, or anal oral), and even anal fingering (with a finger smaller than the toy).

4. Explore different uses

Just as it usually takes a few tries to do anything perfectly, “it might take a bit of trial and error at first to figure out what shape, motions, and sensations you enjoy with the toy,” says King. It’s a good idea to test out the different intensity settings, mold the toy in different ways, and position the toy at different angles to see what works for you when you’re first diving in.
