Why Women over 40 struggle to lose belly fat

One of the most common frustrations I hear from women over 40 is this:

“I feel like I’m doing everything right… but my belly fat just won’t budge.”

I understand why so many women feel discouraged.

Because many women are:

  • eating healthier than ever
  • exercising consistently
  • trying harder than ever before

Yet they still feel:

  • inflamed
  • puffy
  • uncomfortable in their clothes
  • exhausted
  • frustrated by stubborn belly fat that seems impossible to lose

If that sounds familiar, I want you to know something first:

You are not failing.
And your body is not working against you.

After coaching thousands of women through Hitch Fit and working as a trauma-informed coach and trauma & resilience life coach, I’ve learned that fat loss after 40 is about far more than simply “eating less and moving more.”

Women’s bodies go through significant hormonal, metabolic, emotional, and nervous system changes during perimenopause and beyond.

And many traditional fitness programs completely ignore that reality.

Why Belly Fat Often Increases After 40

As women move through their 40s, hormonal fluctuations, especially involving estrogen, progesterone, insulin sensitivity, and cortisol, can begin affecting:

  • fat storage (where it is more likely stored when calories are in excess shifts to the stomach area)
  • muscle retention (muscle loss starts to speed up in our mid to late 30’s without intervention)
  • recovery
  • sleep
  • energy
  • inflammation (can be linked to foods, but also unresolved trauma in the body which is amplified through menopausal seasons)
  • cravings
  • stress resilience

This is one reason many women suddenly feel like the strategies that worked in their 20s and 30s no longer work anymore.

And unfortunately, many women respond by becoming even more restrictive:

  • eating less (severe restriction rather than a moderate deficit)
  • overdoing cardio
  • skipping meals
  • obsessing over calories (this can cause trauma responses to surface)
  • constantly starting over (also a trauma response often linked to all or nothing thinking and perfectionism)

But often, this creates even more stress on the body.

The Stress and Cortisol Connection

One of the biggest missing conversations in women’s fitness is the impact chronic stress has on fat loss especially belly fat.

When the nervous system is under constant stress, whether from:

  • emotional overwhelm
  • poor sleep
  • overtraining
  • under eating
  • caregiving stress
  • anxiety
  • years of pressure
  • unresolved emotional stress

the body can remain in a prolonged state of survival mode. Science shows us that when there is unresolved trauma and unhealed places in our stories, those things become amplified through menopausal phases when estrogen levels start to drop. So anything untended from the past starts to show itself even more during this season.

Research shows that chronically elevated cortisol may contribute to:

  • increased abdominal fat storage (there still needs to be an excess of calorie intake for new fat to be stored – but hormonal changes impact hunger regulation in women which makes this challenging)
  • cravings (those hunger hormones can cause a woman to feel hungry even when her calorie intake has been sufficient for the day)
  • inflammation (linked to many things including stress and unresolved trauma/toxic stress from the past)
  • blood sugar dysregulation
  • muscle breakdown
  • poor recovery
  • disrupted sleep

The big takeaway to understand here is that for many/most women over 40, the body becomes even more sensitive to stress during perimenopause.

This is why I believe women over 40 often need a smarter and more supportive approach, not a harsher one.

Why Muscle Matters So Much After 40

One of the biggest shifts I help women make inside Hitch Fit is moving away from the mindset of simply trying to “get smaller.”

Because after 40, preserving and building muscle becomes incredibly important.

Muscle supports:

  • metabolism
  • insulin sensitivity
  • blood sugar regulation
  • confidence
  • healthy aging
  • strength
  • mental health
  • immune function
  • independence
  • long-term fat loss

This is one reason I emphasize intelligent strength training so heavily in my coaching.

Many women have spent years trapped in cycles of:

  • endless cardio
  • crash dieting
  • restriction
  • punishment-based fitness
  • all or nothing patterns

But sustainable transformation often happens when women stop fighting their bodies and start supporting them properly.

Getting to the Root Instead of Just Treating Symptoms

As a trauma-informed coach, I care deeply about helping women understand the deeper root issues that may be impacting their health and consistency.

Because sometimes belly fat is not simply about food.

Sometimes it’s connected to:

  • chronic stress
  • nervous system dysregulation
  • emotional eating
  • burnout
  • perfectionism
  • years of self-criticism
  • poor recovery
  • lack of nourishment
  • all-or-nothing thinking

I believe real transformation requires more than handing someone a meal plan and workout routine.

Yes, strategy matters.
But story matters too.

I take time to truly understand the women I coach because sustainable transformation happens when women feel:

  • supported
  • educated
  • empowered
  • seen
  • safe
  • encouraged

Not shamed.

What Actually Helps Women Lose Belly Fat After 40

The answer is usually not:

  • starving yourself
  • extreme cardio
  • detoxes
  • punishment
  • obsession

Instead, I encourage women to focus on:

  • consistent strength training
  • adequate protein intake
  • walking daily
  • improving sleep
  • stress management
  • nervous system support
  • proper recovery
  • sustainable nutrition
  • consistency over perfection
  • doing the deeper story engagement work to heal from the inside, lose the emotional weight so that the physical weight stays off.

Small sustainable habits create powerful long-term results.

You Are Not Too Late

Women over 40 can absolutely:

  • lose belly fat
  • build muscle
  • improve metabolism
  • regain confidence

But often, the body needs support not more punishment.
