Why your nervous system matters for fat loss after 40
If you’re a woman over 40 struggling to lose weight despite eating healthy, exercising consistently, and trying harder than ever…
I want you to hear this first:
You are not lazy.
You are not failing.
And you are not broken.
Over the years, through Hitch Fit, I’ve worked with thousands of women navigating fat loss resistance, hormonal changes, emotional eating, burnout, stress, low confidence, and feeling completely disconnected from their bodies.
Many women come to me feeling frustrated because they’ve been told the answer is simply:
- eat less
- work harder
- do more cardio
- have more discipline
But after years as a trauma-informed coach and trauma & resilience life coach, I’ve learned something incredibly important:
Many women are not struggling because they lack motivation.
They are struggling because their bodies and nervous systems have been living under chronic stress for years.
And often, traditional fitness programs only bandage symptoms instead of helping women understand and address the deeper root issues affecting their health, habits, metabolism, mindset, and relationship with their body.
That is one of the biggest reasons my coaching approach is different.
Your Body Is Not Fighting You
One of the most heartbreaking things I hear from women over 40 is:
“I don’t even recognize my body anymore.”
Many women feel:
- exhausted
- inflamed
- puffy
- emotionally drained
- stuck
- frustrated that nothing seems to work anymore
And quietly, many begin blaming themselves.
But often, the body is not working against you.
It is responding to stress, survival mode, hormonal shifts, nervous system dysregulation, lack of recovery, emotional overwhelm, years of self-criticism, and chronic pressure.
The nervous system plays a major role in:
- fat storage
- inflammation
- cravings
- cortisol levels
- sleep quality
- metabolism
- emotional eating
- digestion
- recovery
- energy levels
And during perimenopause and beyond, many women become even more sensitive to these stressors.
Why Stress Can Make Fat Loss Harder After 40
Research continues to show that chronic stress and elevated cortisol may contribute to:
- stubborn belly fat
- muscle breakdown
- increased cravings
- poor sleep
- blood sugar dysregulation
- inflammation
- slower recovery
This is one reason many women feel like the strategies that worked in their 20s and 30s suddenly stop working after 40.
So many women respond by becoming even more restrictive:
- drastically cutting calories
- skipping meals
- overtraining
- constantly starting over
- chasing exhaustion
But more stress is rarely the answer for an already overwhelmed body.
Why I Take a Trauma-Informed Approach
As a trauma-informed coach, I believe true transformation requires more than just handing someone a meal plan and workout routine.
Yes, strategy matters.
Nutrition matters.
Strength training matters.
But your story matters too.
The emotional side of transformation matters.
The nervous system matters.
The patterns women have carried for years matter.
I care deeply about helping women uncover the root issues that may be impacting:
- emotional eating
- self sabotage
- burnout
- perfectionism
- chronic stress
- body image struggles
- inconsistency
- fear of failure
- shame around their body
Because when we only place bandages on symptoms without addressing what’s happening underneath, women often stay trapped in cycles of frustration and discouragement.
My goal is not just helping women lose weight.
My goal is helping women become stronger physically, emotionally, mentally, and sustainably.
Strength Training Creates More Than Physical Change
One of the most empowering things women over 40 can do is begin building muscle through intelligent strength training.
Muscle supports:
- metabolism
- insulin sensitivity
- bone density
- confidence
- healthy aging
- resilience
- long-term health
But beyond the physical transformation, strength training can help women reconnect with themselves again.
I’ve watched women who once felt defeated begin feeling:
- empowered
- capable
- confident
- energized
- hopeful
That transformation is incredibly powerful.
Simple Ways to Support Your Nervous System After 40
Some of the most impactful strategies are often the simplest:
- Prioritize quality sleep
- Strength train consistently
- Walk daily
- Stop chronically under-eating (and losing muscle – develop a muscle mindset)
- Eat enough protein
- Create recovery time
- Practice stress management
- Reduce all-or-nothing thinking (this is a trauma-response, a way of thinking that got wired in to keep you safe as a child – it can be rewired gently)
- Focus on consistency over perfection (again perfectionism is a trauma-response, it’s not your personality, it’s a survival mechanism that can be gently rewired)
- Learn to work with your body instead of constantly fighting it
Small sustainable habits create long-term transformation.
You Are Not Too Late
Women over 40 can absolutely:
- lose body fat
- build muscle
- improve energy
- regain confidence
- feel strong again
- create incredible transformation – that is also sustainable.
But often the path forward requires a smarter, more supportive, and more sustainable approach.
That is exactly why I created the:
