How to think of stress management as energy management
How much energy do you have in your tank? Do you wake up every morning already stressed about your day? Instead of adding or removing things from your life to manage stress, clinical child and adolescent psychologist Jenna Glover, PhD explains how energy management can reduce stress in children and adults.
“Now the more decisions you make during the day, the more you use those executive functions and the more you’re going to drain that tank,” says Dr. Glover.
Dr. Glover describes a time when her workday emptied her tank from hitting the snooze button and feeling flustered to get out the door, not fueling her body properly and taking on more projects than she could handle. She illustrates the prefrontal cortex, the part of your brain that is responsible for executive functions and how essential decisions are in replenishing the proverbial “tank”.
