Pediatric Heart Transplant: Thomas, 25 Years Later
Thomas was just 6 months old when he received his heart transplant. This lifesaving transplant allowed him to live the last 25 years to the fullest.
David Campbell, MD, who performed the transplant, says that at the time of the transplant, the average survival length for a heart was about 14 years. Thomas has beaten the odds with the help of amazing long-term care team and Thomas ensuring he eats healthy, adheres to a strict medication schedule and stays active. Thomas has not only had a healthy life, but an active one, even playing for his college baseball team.
He’s grateful to have not only graduated college, but to have played baseball while he was there. He’s also grateful for his amazing friends, family and the medical teams who supported him along the way.
Our Heart Institute recognized a milestone this year by passing 550 heart transplants. It’s seeing kids like Thomas return as healthy adults that makes this milestone, and this very important work, even more significant.
“It’s rewarding to see that a procedure carried out to save a life has been so successful,” Dr. Campbell says. “It means we all did the right thing – patient, parents, the transplant team. But most of all it gives hope and confidence to all the families and patients facing such a difficult and challenging time in their lives.”
