What is a Proctocolectomy and J-Pouch Procedure?

When ulcerative colitis or inflammatory bowel disease gets too severe and medicines can no longer control the symptoms, surgeons may need to remove the large intestine. The surgical removal of the large intestine is called a proctocolectomy. The procedure usually takes two or three stages to complete. This video focuses on the two-stage approach.

During the procedure, surgeons need to create a new path for waste to leave the body. The new path they create is made by using the small intestine to form an internal pouch, often called a j pouch, which is then connected to the anus so stool can exit the body.

Surgeons at Children’s Hospital Colorado often use robotic-assisted surgery for this procedure to ensure a high level of precision and to help patients heal faster. Watch this video to learn more about the procedure.
