From Risk to Response: Building a Suicide Prevention Screening in Primary Care

Youth at risk for suicide often turn to primary care first for help. Our Suicide Prevention program provides practical training and consultation to help healthcare professionals implement an evidence-informed youth suicide prevention care pathway and deliver suicide-safer care. You’ll learn how to respond when a patient reports suicidal thoughts, stabilize their immediate safety and connect them to appropriate ongoing support.
This video focuses on the screening step of the pathway. It models clear, compassionate language for talking with youth and caregivers. The video shows how to introduce and conduct screening in a supportive manner. Additionally, it outlines the next steps to take when a screen is positive, including collaborating on immediate safety steps and counseling on reducing access to potentially lethal means during periods of elevated risk.

About the program:
The Pathway to Suicide Prevention supports primary care teams with step-by-step implementation, tools, and consultation to build consistent processes for screening, assessment and safety planning. If you or someone you know is in immediate danger or thinking about suicide, call or text 988 (U.S.) to reach the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline or contact local emergency services.
