Pediatric cardiologist Benjamin Smith, MD, knows heart disease can be stressful and overwhelming for young patients and their parents. That’s why he takes the extra time to help families understand the condition. “I’m very much a visual person, and so when I sit down with a new diagnosis for a family, I often will draw a picture of the heart,” he says. “I try to explain using a diagram to make sure that they understand what exactly is going on.”
Dr. Smith also emphasizes a team approach to ensure that each patient receives the best possible care. “I work very closely with the interventionists, intensivists and surgeons to come up with the appropriate surgical or interventional plan,” he explains. “We make sure we do what’s right for them and their families.”
