Casting With the Ponseti Method
The Ponseti method, a non-surgical treatment for clubfoot, usually requires a cast for about five weeks. Once a week, your provider will change your child’s cast. If your child requires a tenotomy (surgery to release a tendon) after the first casting period, they will need another cast after their tenotomy.
Before arriving for your cast changing appointment, soak the cast in warm vinegar water at home for 20 to 25 minutes. This softens the cast so your team can remove it with safety scissors. Once the soaking is complete, dip a dishcloth in the vinegar water and wrap it around the cast. Cover the dishcloth with plastic wrap, and head to the clinic for your appointment.
In general, we don’t recommend removing the cast at home unless the cast is slipping or there is an emergency. In these cases, soak the cast as usual, find the edge of the casting material and unwind the cast.
