As a pediatric orthopedic surgeon, Star Nixon, MD, cares for children with musculoskeletal conditions every day. And as a mom, Dr. Nixon understands how these issues can be stressful for parents and kids.
“I always try to put myself in the parent’s shoes,” Dr. Nixon says. “I have a child who’s been in the hospital and has health needs. So, I always try to consider how I would feel in that situation.”
Dr. Nixon also helps her young patients feel at ease by taking the time to explain their care, especially when it comes to surgery.
“I want to answer their questions,” she says. “If they have an idea of what the next step is and the step after that, maybe it won’t be so scary.”
For acute orthopedic injuries like broken bones, Dr. Nixon enjoys helping children get back to sports, dance or just living life without pain. “Helping a kid get back to whatever it is they love to do is so rewarding,” she says.
Dr. Nixon has a special connection to her patients with complex orthopedic conditions. “I get to take care of people who have high needs,” Dr. Nixon explains. “And as the mother of a child with health needs, I really take that very seriously. And it feels like an honor.”
