A metered dose inhaler (MDI) should be given with a spacer (valved holding chamber) to ease the delivery of medicine into the lungs and make the medicine more effective. A mask should be used with the spacer for younger children who cannot make a tight seal around the mouthpiece or coordinate inhaling and holding their breath for 10 seconds.
