Sedation vs. General Anesthesia for Children’s Dental Care

Your child’s dentist may recommend sedation or general anesthesia — two medications that change how awake they are — when providing dental care. Sedation makes your child relaxed and sleepy, but they remain awake for the procedure, while general anesthesia puts your child into a deep sleep.

Both sedation and general anesthesia are meant to relax your child and are used to reduce pain, anxiety and your child’s movement during the procedure. Sedation is usually recommended for older children who can speak and don’t have any major health concerns. Although your child will be drowsy, this means your child’s dentist can still communicate with them during the procedure. While general anesthesia will put your child fully to sleep so they can’t communicate during the procedure.
