Exercise With an Athletic Trainer: Scapular Pushups
Athletic trainer Nick Cole demonstrates scapular pushups, which strengthen the serratus anterior, an important muscle along the upper ribs. This exercise reinforces proper movement patterns around the shoulder blade, to create stability and reduce injury risk.
To begin, get into pushup position. Push your torso up using just your shoulders, while keeping your arms straight, lower your body using the range of motion provided by your shoulder. Complete 10 to 15 repetitions for two to three sets.
This exercise’s difficulty can be adjusted – easier by using a wall instead, or more difficult by completing a full pushup or a band around your wrists.
