Fetal Surgery for Spina Bifida: A Family’s Journey
Katie’s third pregnancy was going just like her first two until her 20-week ultrasound. It revealed that her and her husband, Kyle’s, unborn child had myelomeningocele (MMC), a serious form of spina bifida. Fetal specialists at Children’s Hospital Colorado’s Colorado Fetal Care Center determined that fetal surgery was an option for Katie. One of the most advanced treatments for MMC, fetal surgery for spina bifida offers several advantages over post-birth treatment options.
Follow this family’s journey from the prenatal (before birth) diagnosis of MMC through the successful surgery and healthy birth of Liam. This video highlights Katie and Kyle’s roller coaster of emotions, as well as their resolve, as they work to give Liam the best chance at a high quality of life.
