Diagnosed with a Heart Defect as an Adult: Melanie’s Story

At birth, Melanie’s family was told that her heart murmur was nothing to worry about. It wasn’t until years later into her adult life that she was diagnosed with a bicuspid aortic valve, a heart defect that had been there all along and required surgery.

Melanie found a home for her cardiac care at Children’s Hospital Colorado. Here, experts in our nationally ranked Heart Institute provide lifelong care for patients with congenital heart defects. We’re changing the future of adult congenital heart disease (ACHD) and improving quality of life for patients living with CHD of all ages and stages.

Two surgeries and a pacemaker later, Melanie is doing well and can play intermural soccer and chase her 5-year-old around the field. Because of Melanie’s activity level and her history, she takes her heart care seriously, following up annually with the leading ACHD-trained cardiologists and electrophysiologists at Children’s Colorado. Watch to learn more about her journey and how she receives cardiology care tailored to her through the Adult Congenital Heart Disease Program.
