Pediatric Kidney Transplant: Overview & Procedure
Kidney failure in children, or end-stage renal disease, is a permanent condition where the kidney no longer functions normally. Although many diseases can cause kidney failure, the most common ones belong to a group of conditions called “congenital abnormalities of the kidneys and urinary tract,” or CAKUT. At Children’s Hospital Colorado, we have a specialized CAKUT clinic that proudly collaborates with Donor Alliance and the National Kidney Registry to ensure the best donor match for your child.
A kidney transplant involves placing a healthy, donated kidney into the abdomen. We work with you and your child to help with planning and manage their recovery, post-operative medications and long-term care. Watch the video to learn more about our kidney transplantation process.
