Hannah’s Story: Beating the Odds with Sickle Cell Disease

“It was a pretty big moment — mind-blowing actually,” says Hannah.

What was that moment? When she found out she was completely cured of sickle cell disease. She lived with the condition for more than 17 years, but our Hematology Program made her family’s dream of living without it a reality.

Hannah and her family came to our pediatric hematology team from New York and quickly felt a difference.

“Everything they were doing was different,” says Mary, Hannah’s mom. “The treatment, how the staff is — everything was really exceptional here.”

Our pediatric hematology experts take pride in getting to know the kids they care for and their families, while finding the best care for them. Often, that involves hematology research. Clinical research gives us, and the families we care for, access to the most advanced pediatric treatments that aren’t always available elsewhere.

Watch this video to learn more about how our hematology experts approach care, provide treatment into adulthood and utilize hematology clinical trials. You can also follow Hannah’s journey and see how a bone marrow transplant helped cure her sickle cell disease.
