Managing Your Child’s Pain After Surgery
It’s normal for children to experience some pain after surgery, but a pain management plan can help reduce and control pain. If your child is having surgery, your care team will discuss your pain management plan before the procedure. This discussion before surgery can set expectations about how the team will manage your child’s pain after surgery. The plan can make your child more comfortable and get them back to normal activities as soon as possible.
Every child experiences pain differently. This video will help you talk to your child about pain after surgery, including what to expect and the importance of reporting pain. We’ll also review signs of pain in very young children or those who don’t communicate well. This video also reviews several methods to manage pain, such as anesthesia, opioid medications, over-the-counter medications and strategies that don’t involve medication.
Establishing a pain management plan and knowing what to expect can help you and your child handle this stressful time. Talk to your child’s care team before surgery to address any concerns, help you understand how much pain is normal after surgery and ask questions.
