Eyesight Changes During Pregnancy and Motherhood

Pregnancy can bring about various changes to a woman’s body, including her eyesight. One of the most common eye changes experienced during pregnancy is blurred vision. This can occur due to hormonal fluctuations, which can affect the shape of the cornea. In some cases, blurred vision may be temporary and improve after delivery.

Dry eyes are a common condition during pregnancy due to hormonal changes. These hormonal fluctuations can reduce tear production, decreasing the quality and quantity of tears. This can cause discomfort, irritation, dryness, or eye grit.

Elevated hormone levels during pregnancy can cause temporary changes in the eye’s structure. Specifically, the cornea, the clear front part of the eye, may become more curved. This increased curvature can lead to nearsightedness.

Nearsightedness, or myopia, is when objects up close appear clear, but distant objects are blurry. Some women may experience an increase in nearsightedness during pregnancy, primarily due to hormonal changes that can affect the shape of the eye.
