Achondroplasia: Health Concerns and Treatments
As the most common type of dwarfism, achondroplasia is a genetic disorder that prevents cartilage from developing into bone, specifically in the long bones in the arms and legs. Although there is no cure for achondroplasia, the experts in our Orthopedics Institute can treat many of the symptoms caused by this condition.
Most children with achondroplasia don’t need surgery for their symptoms and we offer many achondroplasia treatments to help kids live full lives. In this video, we explain the different areas of the body achondroplasia affects and the many treatment options available.
We also explain other health concerns that are common with achondroplasia, such as genu varum, kyphosis, spinal stenosis and foramen magnum stenosis. You’ll learn about our advanced treatments for these issues, including guided growth surgery, posterior column osteotomy, laminectomy and limb-lengthening surgery.
