The Surgical Oncology Program at Children’s Hospital Colorado’s sees a high number of cases every year. These high volumes, which include extremely rare tumors in addition to more common conditions, have helped us excel in the field and provide some of the best surgical treatment in the country.
By performing more pediatric tumor surgeries, our team gains the experience necessary to decide the best course of action for treatment. A treatment plan for each patient is carefully thought-out, discussed and designed based on each unique condition and situation.
“These cases are not only rare, but they are unique,” says Anna Linton, physician assistant. “We have the benefit of seeing a lot of them and having very experienced surgeons who are comfortable with these diagnoses and have done a lot of these surgical cases.”
Our collaborative approach with pediatric specialists across the hospital helps us identify the best combination of surgical oncology treatment, which can include multimodal therapies such as chemotherapy and radiation therapy as well as surgical treatment.
In addition to providing expert diagnoses and treatment for children, we also work to help the families of patients.
“The Surgical Oncology Program recognizes that this could be the scariest time of a family’s entire life,” says Dr. Jonathon Roach. “We want to care not only for the patient, as well as the stress that places on the parents, the siblings, as well as the extended family. And we work hard to alleviate that stress as much as possible.”
