How to Clean Your Child’s Trach Stoma



A tracheostomy, also called a trach, is a surgically created hole or stoma in the windpipe. The stoma, with a tube inserted and held by trach ties, and creates an alternative way for your child to breathe.
If your child has a trach stoma, it’s important to keep the area clean and dry. Moisture or drainage around a trach stoma is normal but can cause skin irritation and infection. You should clean your child’s trach stoma and change the trach ties once a day or more often if the area gets wet or dirty.
