Formally trained as a musician, Emily Downs, MD, is amazed at how similar the energy is between performing music and performing surgery. Of course, as a cardiothoracic surgeon, she gains much more than a standing ovation – she gets a family’s respect and gratitude for life.
Dr. Downs also feels a different sense of accomplishment after performing heart surgery. Especially those that are more complex or take some extra investigative work.
“It’s wonderful to think about the potential in every child that you’re taking care of,” she says, “and how they have this future that they’re going to carry forward and whatever you do is just an ongoing investment in their future.”
Children’s Hospital Colorado is very lucky that Dr. Downs decided to change career paths, and we know the children she treats feel the same way.
