Meet Our Doc: Kristine Corkum, MD, Pediatric Surgeon
Kristine Corkum, MD, was six years old when her one-day-old brother needed life-saving surgery. He was born with jejunal atresia, a rare type of obstruction in the small bowel. As a young girl, she was fascinated by his doctors’ skills and courage. Now, as a pediatric surgeon, she helps give families the same peace of mind.
“They gave him a lifetime,” says Dr. Corkum. “I get to show up to work every day and try to improve a full lifetime for patients and families.”
While Dr. Corkum performs surgeries daily, she understands it’s often new and intimidating for patients and families. She makes an extra effort to acknowledge, listen and understand every child’s parent or caregiver in order to alleviate their concerns.
“It’s a big responsibility to be someone’s surgeon,” says Dr. Corkum. “To be able to gain [their] trust and just understand that we are all here to take care of their child as best we know how.”
