Without calling anyone out, we\u2019ll just say they&#8217;re claiming it has more nutritional benefits and giving it to their kids.<\/p>\n<p>When it comes to this trend, experts are concerned; they want to warn people of the dangers and why they recommend drinking pasteurized milk. Let\u2019s get into it with a registered dietitian.<\/p>\n<h2>Wait, what is pasteurized milk?<\/h2>\n<p>For starters, it\u2019s less complicated than it sounds. \u201cStated simply, pasteurization is a method of heating raw milk to a temperature that kills known harmful bacteria that could potentially make you sick,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.everydaynutritionllc.com\/about-us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.everydaynutritionllc.com\/about-us\/\">Tracy Mann, RD<\/a>, founder of Everyday Nutrition.<\/p>\n<div class=\"\">\n<hr\/>\n<div class=\"experts-in-article noskim py-[24px] px-[40px]\">\n<p>Experts In This Article<\/p>\n<ul class=\"!ml-[18px]\">\n<li> <a href=\"\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"\">Tracy Mann, RD<\/a>, registered dietitian and founder of Everyday Nutrition \u00a0 <\/li>\n<\/ul><\/div>\n<hr\/><\/div>\n<p>Those types of bacteria can include Salmonella, E. coli, Listeria, Campylobacter, and others\u2014which can be especially dangerous for people with weakened immune systems, children, older adults, and pregnant women, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/food\/buy-store-serve-safe-food\/dangers-raw-milk-unpasteurized-milk-can-pose-serious-health-risk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/food\/buy-store-serve-safe-food\/dangers-raw-milk-unpasteurized-milk-can-pose-serious-health-risk\">according to the FDA<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Pasteurization hasn\u2019t always been a thing, however. \u201cThis was developed as people moved further away from the source and milk had to travel longer distances and be kept stable longer,\u201d Mann adds.<\/p>\n<p>The developer in question: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.americandairy.com\/dairy-diary\/what-is-pasteurization-and-why-is-it-important\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.americandairy.com\/dairy-diary\/what-is-pasteurization-and-why-is-it-important\">Louis Pasteur<\/a>. Back in the 1860s, he found heating beer and wine killed harmful bacteria. That <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/food-poisoning\/symptoms-causes\/syc-20356230\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/food-poisoning\/symptoms-causes\/syc-20356230\">could look like vomiting, diarrhea, a fever, or stomach cramps<\/a>, among a host of other symptoms. Because of this, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/foodsafety\/rawmilk\/nonpasteurized-outbreaks-maps.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/foodsafety\/rawmilk\/nonpasteurized-outbreaks-maps.html\">over 20 states have outlawed selling raw milk<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Contracting an illness from unpasteurized milk isn\u2019t necessarily super common\u2014from 1998 to 2018, the CDC noted <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/foodsafety\/rawmilk\/rawmilk-outbreaks.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/foodsafety\/rawmilk\/rawmilk-outbreaks.html\">202 outbreaks<\/a>\u2014but is it worth risking even the chance of hunching over the toilet for hours? Plus, the CDC adds those outbreaks led to 228 hospitalizations\u2026yikes.<\/p>\n<p>Further, it\u2019s important to note that it doesn\u2019t matter if the raw milk received a negative laboratory test, is organic, can be found at the farmer\u2019s market, or comes from hygienic farms. Regardless, the risk is still there, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/foodsafety\/rawmilk\/raw-milk-questions-and-answers.html\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/foodsafety\/rawmilk\/raw-milk-questions-and-answers.html\">according to the CDC<\/a>. Mann adds that bacteria can \u201ccontaminate the milk through feces, germs on the cow\u2019s skin, environmental conditions, and the conditions of the facilities where the milk is obtained and stored.\u201d This is why the only solution when selling milk in grocery stores is\u2014you guessed it\u2014pasteurization.<\/p>\n<h2>But aren\u2019t natural foods \u201cbetter\u201d than processed foods?<\/h2>\n<p>Whether from a friend or advertisement, you may have heard that food is healthier in its natural form. However, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/what-is-processed-food\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/what-is-processed-food\/\">that\u2019s not always the case<\/a>. \u201cSome types of processing are needed to protect health,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/foodsafety\/rawmilk\/raw-milk-questions-and-answers.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/foodsafety\/rawmilk\/raw-milk-questions-and-answers.html\">the CDC writes<\/a>, explaining pasteurization kills disease-causing germs.<\/p>\n<p>While <em>some <\/em>of that bacteria may be helpful, it acknowledges, the bigger concern is the risk you run of getting sick from the harmful bacteria. If you\u2019re looking for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/foods-with-good-bacteria\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/foods-with-good-bacteria\/\">foods packed with good bacteria<\/a>, check out probiotic yogurt, miso, sauerkraut, wild salmon, and kimchi instead.<\/p>\n<p>Also, you\u2019re not losing much of the \u201cgood stuff\u201d by opting for pasteurized milk products. The CDC adds that \u201cmost nutrients remain in milk after it is pasteurized.\u201d (A win-win if I&#8217;ve ever heard of one.)<\/p>\n<h2>Clearing up other myths about pasteurized milk<\/h2>\n<p>Again\u2014and to be clear\u2014pasteurization does <em>not<\/em> reduce the milk\u2019s nutrients, make it safe for people with dairy allergies, or mean it can be left unrefrigerated for long periods of time, <a href=\"https:\/\/health.clevelandclinic.org\/the-dangers-of-raw-milk-what-you-should-know\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/health.clevelandclinic.org\/the-dangers-of-raw-milk-what-you-should-know\/\">according to the Cleveland Clinic<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Also, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/is-dairy-bad-for-your-gut\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/is-dairy-bad-for-your-gut\/\">dairy isn\u2019t bad for your gut<\/a>, despite what you may see on social media.<\/p>\n<p>For her part, Mann has seen her fair share of mixed takes\u2014many unsupported by research, she says\u2014and adds this: \u201cOther claims, like [raw milk] is better for lactose intolerance or has more antimicrobials than pasteurized milk, aren\u2019t accurate or are an exaggeration of facts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In other words, this is one of those times when you may want to ignore what some TikTok creators are saying. The next time you\u2019re buying a jug of milk\u2014or yogurt, or ice cream, or another dairy product\u2014take a quick second to ensure you see the word \u201cpasteurized\u201d on the label.
