Here&#8217;s what our panel of MDs had to say.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"co172\">So, should you tell your doctor you smoke weed? We have a specialized medical knowledge that we ultimately use to keep you healthy. And by that I mean not just medications that are prescribed to you, but sometimes people use medications from friends or family and don\u2019t have a prescription for it. Make sure you share that with your doctor as well.<\/p>\n<p id=\"co181\">You want to share any supplements you take. Nutritional supplements, how much caffeine and alcohol you consume, and other drugs. There are some that people may not think to share. For example there are drugs that folks use to enhance their sexual performance that they may not associate with being an actual drug or substance.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>I&#8217;m not the police, I&#8217;m your doctor. We&#8217;re not here to admonish people. There&#8217;s no judgment. We&#8217;re here to help you. \u2014Divesh Goel, MD<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p id=\"co173\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1150733 js-inline-lazy-load\" alt=\"Divesh Goel, MD, headshot banner\" width=\"1170\" height=\"195\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Expert-Banner_Divesh-Goel-MD__falsexfalse_true_70.webp\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"co183\">&#8220;You should tell your doctor everything!<\/p>\n<p id=\"co184\">I tell patients, \u2018I&#8217;m not the police, I&#8217;m your doctor.\u2019 It usually works because I&#8217;m pretty casual, and they feel like they can tell me everything: Drug use, non-prescribed [medication] use, herbs, supplements, even if it&#8217;s a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/multivitamin-side-effects\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/multivitamin-side-effects\/\">multivitamin<\/a>, even if it\u2019s folate or post- or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/best-pre-workout-powders\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/best-pre-workout-powders\/\">pre-workout supplements<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p id=\"co185\">Everybody can Google things or read articles, but doctors study it. We&#8217;re not here to admonish people. There&#8217;s no judgment. Our point of view is really to consult for you. We&#8217;re here to help you.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1150725 js-inline-lazy-load\" alt=\"Samuel Mathis, MD, headshot banner\" width=\"1170\" height=\"195\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Expert-Banner_Samuel-Mathis-MD__falsexfalse_true_70.webp\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"co174\">&#8220;An open conversation with your physician is vital to help your doctor understand you as a person. And to help them understand how to best make recommendations.<\/p>\n<p id=\"co175\">If you smoked pot in college, but you haven&#8217;t done it in 30 years, that may not be as important of a discussion. Could you still tell them that you tried it once? You can, but if you\u2019re not regularly using it or haven&#8217;t\u00a0used it in the last five to 10 years, it\u2019s probably not a huge issue.<\/p>\n<p id=\"co176\">With other substances like LSD, cocaine, and heroin, though, maybe you need to have that conversation because of the long-term effects and complications those substances could have on you in the future. Knowing that you\u2019ve [used these] substances in the past can be really helpful for me as a doctor to make recommendations, or determine if any health complications are from heavy use in the past.<\/p>\n<p id=\"co177\">I would always recommend to share with your doctors what supplements you are taking. Many times those supplements could have interactions with prescription medications. Knowing what herbs or supplements you\u2019re taking can also help your doctor make recommendations on whether you should stop taking them because of potential side effects with other medications.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2>The takeaway<\/h2>\n<p>When it comes to substances\u2014whether it\u2019s marijuana or multivitamins\u2014experts agree: The best policy is honesty.<\/p>\n<p>Doctors have good reasons for quizzing you on your substance use\u2014and no, it\u2019s not just nosiness. (Nor do they generally care about the legality of what you&#8217;re using. In nearly all cases, what you tell your doctor will be protected by physician-patient confidentiality, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20230202152255\/https:\/\/wexnermedical.osu.edu\/blog\/should-you-tell-your-doctor-about-your-drug-use\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20230202152255\/https:\/\/wexnermedical.osu.edu\/blog\/should-you-tell-your-doctor-about-your-drug-use\">The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center<\/a>, unless you&#8217;re at serious risk of hurting yourself or others.)<\/p>\n<p id=\"co168\">Rather, doctors ask because many substances have health implications. Take vitamins, for example: Some can interact with prescribed meds, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org\/discussion\/mayo-clinic-q-and-a-can-medications-and-supplements-interact-with-one-another\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org\/discussion\/mayo-clinic-q-and-a-can-medications-and-supplements-interact-with-one-another\/\">Mayo Clinic<\/a>. Regular marijuana use may mean you\u2019ll need more anesthesia during surgery, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/today\/marijuana-and-anesthesia-why-tell-your-doctor-about-your-use\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/today\/marijuana-and-anesthesia-why-tell-your-doctor-about-your-use\">UCHealth<\/a>, while using cocaine can lead to immediate side effects and potentially lasting changes to heart health, per the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.heart.org\/en\/health-topics\/consumer-healthcare\/what-is-cardiovascular-disease\/illegal-drugs-and-heart-disease\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.heart.org\/en\/health-topics\/consumer-healthcare\/what-is-cardiovascular-disease\/illegal-drugs-and-heart-disease\">American Heart Association<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p id=\"co169\">In other words, taking substances may directly affect your health, in the short or long term, and if you\u2019re open with your doctor, it can help them know what to look for and better understand your overall health.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u200cConfused about your health?
