According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hopkinsmedicine.org\/health\/conditions-and-diseases\/psoriasis\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.hopkinsmedicine.org\/health\/conditions-and-diseases\/psoriasis\">Johns Hopkins Medicine<\/a>, it\u2019s characterized by \u201cinflamed, red, raised areas that often develop into silvery scales,\u201d and can show up anywhere you have skin. According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.psoriasis.org\/topical-treatments\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.psoriasis.org\/topical-treatments\/\">The National Psoriasis Foundation<\/a>, \u201cCorticosteroids control inflammatory responses in the body, among other important functions, making them an ideal anti-inflammatory agent to reduce swelling and redness caused by plaques.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Considering corticosteroids generally require a prescription, Dr. Kilgour notes that the best course of action here is consulting a dermatologist.\u00a0\u201cScalp psoriasis is notoriously difficult to treat, as many of the topicals that we use for psoriasis on the body do not penetrate well on the scalp,\u201d he says<\/p>\n<p>With that in mind, he points out that many derms lean toward biologics for scalp psoriasis treatment. \u201cWe are now in the era of biologics\u2014medicines designed using synthetic antibodies that are highly targeted to treat the specific immunological pathways involved in skin disease,\u201d he says. \u201cThese biologics can completely clear the skin, including the scalp, and are well tolerated.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re looking to treat scalp psoriasis on your own (which can help, but likely won&#8217;t give you the same results as prescription medications), anti-dandruff shampoo can help.\u00a0\u201cScalp psoriasis can exist on a spectrum with dandruff, known together as sebopsoriasis,\u201d says Dr. Kilgour. \u201cAn <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/dandruff-shampoo-head-shoulders\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/dandruff-shampoo-head-shoulders\/\">anti-dandruff shampoo<\/a> can be an excellent addition to your treatment regimen and help prevent hair loss.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>The Takeaway<\/h2>\n<p>Can scalp psoriasis cause hair loss? Yes. Will it be long-term? No\u2014as long as you get the psoriasis under control.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTypically when addressed early\u2014meaning within the first three months of onset\u2014the hair loss can be reversed,\u201d says<a href=\"https:\/\/www.westlakedermatology.com\/quynh-giao-sartor-md\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" rel=\"nofollow\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.westlakedermatology.com\/quynh-giao-sartor-md\/\">\u00a0Quynh Giao Sartor, MD<\/a>, a board-certified dermatologist based in Houston, Texas.
