As Sky Ting co-founder <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/chloe_kernaghan\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/chloe_kernaghan\/?hl=en\">Chloe Kernaghan<\/a> demonstrates a forward fold in the video, Jones calls attention to what the pose is actually doing for Kernaghan on a spacial and energetic level: \u201cYou&#8217;ll notice Chloe is more internal. She&#8217;s looking at herself. She can&#8217;t see what&#8217;s going on around her. Her head&#8217;s reaching towards the floor, and she&#8217;s moving in towards a hibernation position, like a shelled position.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Grounding in your own body and breath isn\u2019t the only reason inversion yoga offers stress relief, among other benefits. Here\u2019s why you should consider flipping upside down in your next practice.<\/p>\n<h2>What is a yoga inversion?<\/h2>\n<p>Thought of yoga inversions might conjure handstands or headstands. Yoga teachers say flipping upside down is one way to help your body move out of that fight-or-flight mode (though <a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/345813503_Cardio-Pulmonary_Physiology_during_Yoga_Inversion_Practice\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/345813503_Cardio-Pulmonary_Physiology_during_Yoga_Inversion_Practice\">more research is needed<\/a> to declare a causal relationship, scientifically speaking).<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Forward folds stretch and create space between the vertebrae in the spine, which is the commander of our autonomic nervous system,&#8221;\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/savannastevens.com\/about\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/savannastevens.com\/about\">Savanna Stevens<\/a>, founder of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.s3official.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.s3official.com\/\">S3 Yoga<\/a>, previously told Well+Good about the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/forward-fold-benefits\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/forward-fold-benefits\/\">benefits of forward folds<\/a>. &#8220;This system directly affects our response to stress, so folds in yoga are really soothing to the nervous system, mind, and body.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Yoga teacher\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/maraisgrace\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/maraisgrace\/?hl=en\">Mara Olney<\/a> agreed, and explained that yoga instructors will often include forward folds at the end of class before savasana for this reason. &#8220;When you&#8217;re looking for a calming and grounding experience in your yoga practice, forward folds are where you want to dedicate more time,&#8221; Olney says. &#8220;Just like how heart-opening poses energize your nervous system, forward folding postures create a calming effect throughout your central nervous system.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><em>Check out this calming 20-minute yoga flow featuring several inversions if you want to see the effects for yourself.<\/em><\/p>\n<div class=\"iframe-container\">\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Morning Yoga Routine for Stress Relief | Trainer of the Month Club | Well+Good\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/lakXVTyXQ3s?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h3>It can help build muscle<\/h3>\n<p>Muscles can adjust to new challenges a lot faster than you might think, which is typically why a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/progressive-overload\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/progressive-overload\/\">progressive overload method<\/a> is what trainers often recommend for building muscle. But another way to build strength is to change up the types of movements you\u2019re doing, which is where inversions come in.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;[Inverting] mixes up the regular muscle memory and puts your body in a new position,&#8221; trainer\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/meg_takacs\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/meg_takacs\/?hl=en\">Meg Takacs<\/a>\u00a0previously told Well+Good about\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/core-workouts-for-strength-inversions\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/core-workouts-for-strength-inversions\/\">building strength<\/a>. &#8220;Anytime you do that, you&#8217;re going to confuse your muscle memory and test new ways to move.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h3>It can improve your balance (and strengthen stabilizer muscles)<\/h3>\n<p>Balance is linked to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/balance-and-longevity\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/balance-and-longevity\/\">longevity and injury prevention<\/a>, and one of the best ways to improve balance is to strengthen the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/erector-spinae-muscles\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/erector-spinae-muscles\/\">stabilizer muscles<\/a>\u00a0that surround your spine and other joints. Inversions that require core strength are a great way to target these muscles.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re handling your own bodyweight more because you are at more of an inverted angle, which requires you to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/alicia-archer-balance-and-tone-workout\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/alicia-archer-balance-and-tone-workout\/\">stabilize<\/a>\u00a0and balance more weight,&#8221; Takacs says.<\/p>\n<p>Copeland agrees. \u201cIt&#8217;s a great way to improve circulation, better balance, but it&#8217;s also a great way to work on core strength,&#8221; she says.<\/p>\n<h3>It is highly accessible<\/h3>\n<p>Inversions don&#8217;t need to be advanced or require extreme strength.
