And it\u2019s not necessarily as simple as just forgoing flesh; new factions are forming within the plant-based umbrella seemingly all the time, making for multiple types of vegetarians.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe main categories of plant-based eating that are studied and well-established are:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.beachbodyondemand.com\/blog\/how-a-vegan-diet-can-help-you-lose-weight\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">vegan<\/a>, lacto-ovo vegetarian, and lacto- or ovo-vegetarians,\u201d explains\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/plantbaseddietitian.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Julieanna Hever<\/a>, M.S., R.D., C.P.T., author of\u00a0<i><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2NAGIQS\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Healthspan Solution<\/a><\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0<i><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2ZdekKa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Complete Idiot\u2019s Guide to Plant-Based Nutrition<\/a>.<\/i><\/p>\n<p>To help figure out what might work for you, here\u2019s a look at the many shades of plant-based eating, nearly all of which encourage\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.beachbodyondemand.com\/blog\/stay-healthy-by-eating-the-colors-of-the-rainbow-summer-edition\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">getting more color on your plate<\/a> through nutrient-rich fruits and veggies.<\/p>\n<h2>1. Level 5 Vegan<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/bod-blog-assets.prod.cd.beachbodyondemand.com\/bod-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/28155229\/types-of-vegetarians-600-variety.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-165755\" src=\"https:\/\/bod-blog-assets.prod.cd.beachbodyondemand.com\/bod-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/28155229\/types-of-vegetarians-600-variety.jpeg\" alt=\"Isolated Variety of Fruits and Vegetables | Types of Vegetarian\" width=\"600\" height=\"290\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Considered the strictest form of vegan, a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vegan.com\/level-5-vegan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Level 5 vegan<\/a>\u00a0is defined as \u201cnot eating anything that casts a shadow\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=N_Yaa_LMDcs&amp;rel=0&amp;modestbranding=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">by Lisa Simpson<\/a>\u00a0on a 1995 episode of\u00a0<em>The Simpsons<\/em>\u00a0titled \u201cLisa the Vegetarian.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to show lore, Paul McCartney, who appeared to support Lisa\u2019s veggie-forward journey, required that she quit meat for the rest of the season.<\/p>\n<p>While the definition is clearly a joke (since plants also cast shadows),\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vegan.com\/level-5-vegan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">many vegans<\/a>\u00a0have co-opted this pop culture reference to refer to anyone with a ride-or-die attitude about veganism.<\/p>\n<p>(Turns out, Lisa also never looked back on her decision and is still\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/living\/food\/lisa-simpson-stages-going-vegan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a plant-based hero<\/a>\u00a0more than two decades later.)<\/p>\n<h2>2. Vegan<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/bod-blog-assets.prod.cd.beachbodyondemand.com\/bod-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/28155204\/types-of-vegetarian-600-logo.jpeg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-165750\" src=\"https:\/\/bod-blog-assets.prod.cd.beachbodyondemand.com\/bod-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/28155204\/types-of-vegetarian-600-logo.jpeg\" alt=\"Logo of Veganism on a Leaf | Types of Vegetarian\" width=\"600\" height=\"420\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>According to the OG of veganism, the Vegan Society,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vegansociety.com\/go-vegan\/definition-veganism\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the official definition<\/a>\u00a0inked circa 1949 is \u201cto seek an end to the use of animals by man for food, commodities, work, hunting, vivisection, and by all other uses involving exploitation of animal life by man.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A vegan diet is entirely plant-based and avoids all animal-based foods, such as meat (including fish, shellfish, and insects), dairy, eggs, and honey. There\u2019s the added lifestyle component of also avoiding all other animal-derived products, as well as products tested on animals, and venues that showcase animals for entertainment purposes.<\/p>\n<p>Within veganism, practitioners interpret \u2014 or choose \u2014 to follow these guidelines differently. Some common variations include:<\/p>\n<h3>Ethical<\/h3>\n<p>Involves avoiding all products made by animals or viewed as cruel toward cuddly creatures.<\/p>\n<p>Examples include wearing silk blouses, leather shoes, and makeup tested on animals, or visiting a circus (which offers the added benefit of sidestepping creepy clowns).<\/p>\n<h3>Raw<\/h3>\n<p>Combines a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.beachbodyondemand.com\/blog\/what-is-the-raw-food-diet\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">raw food diet<\/a> with veganism and is focused on eating uncooked veggies, fruits, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beachbodyondemand.com\/blog\/6-benefits-of-whole-grains\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">grains<\/a>. Another spin is \u201cRaw \u2018Till 4,\u201d or eating raw foods until 4 p.m. and then having a cooked dinner.<\/p>\n<h3>High carb, low fat<\/h3>\n<p>The polar opposite to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.beachbodyondemand.com\/blog\/what-is-a-ketogenic-diet\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">keto<\/a>\u00a0in many ways, \u201chigh carb low fat\u201d vegans eat large amounts of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.beachbodyondemand.com\/blog\/what-are-carbs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">carbs<\/a>, such as fruit, vegetables, and grains, and as little fat as possible.<\/p>\n<p>(It\u2019s important to note that fat is a key\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.beachbodyondemand.com\/blog\/count-macros-for-weight-loss\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">macronutrient<\/a>, and important to consume in recommended amounts.)<\/p>\n<h2>3. As such,\u00a0pescatarians diets\u00a0can be highly personalized; one person might eat fish, but swear off shellfish, or vice versa.<\/p>\n<p>Exploring the reasons why some people don\u2019t regard fish the same as meat might dock you in murky waters.<\/p>\n<p>They range from the fact that fish are cold-blooded (versus warm-blooded mammals) to the Catholic Church\u2019s historical\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/thesalt\/2012\/04\/05\/150061991\/lust-lies-and-empire-the-fishy-tale-behind-eating-fish-on-friday\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">exemption that allows the consumption of fish during times of fasting from meat<\/a>, such as Lent.<\/p>\n<h2>7. (Despite the popular advertising campaign, pork is technically the other\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ask.usda.gov\/s\/article\/Is-pork-white-meat\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">red meat<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>And, in an offshoot of an offshoot, pesce-pollotarians are pollotarians who eat fish.<\/p>\n<h2>8. Flexitarian<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/bod-blog-assets.prod.cd.beachbodyondemand.com\/bod-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/28155158\/types-of-vegetarian-600-flexitarian.jpeg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-165749\" src=\"https:\/\/bod-blog-assets.prod.cd.beachbodyondemand.com\/bod-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/28155158\/types-of-vegetarian-600-flexitarian.jpeg\" alt=\"Isolated Images of Meat and Fish Cuts | Types of Vegetarian\" width=\"600\" height=\"519\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A hybrid of the words \u201cflexible\u201d and \u201cvegetarian,\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.beachbodyondemand.com\/blog\/what-is-the-flexitarian-diet\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">flexitarian<\/a>\u00a0is a style of plant-based eating that allows for moderate consumption of flesh.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA flexitarian diet is the same as an omnivorous one, with myriad interpretations, alluding to the intention to reduce animal product consumption,\u201d says Hever.<\/p>\n<h2>How to Start Eating a Vegetarian Diet<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cWe are all creatures of habit, rotating through a few different recipes day after day, week after week,\u201d says Hever. Exploring a plant-based diet is a great way to shake up your routine and add more veggies.<\/p>\n<h3>1. Seek recipe inspiration<\/h3>\n<p>\u201cThe internet offers limitless access to recipes, tips, and ingredients to modify almost anything you have always loved into a plant-based version. The best way to ease into this way of eating is to have fun and explore!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In addition to tasty recipes, Hever\u2019s latest book offers detailed science on plant-based eating. While you\u2019re trying it out, she also recommends using social media for inspiration.<\/p>\n<h3>2. Gather support<\/h3>\n<p>\u201cHaving social support is helpful during the process, and it becomes easier and easier with practice,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<h3>3. Consume essential nutrients<\/h3>\n<p>When you eat right, it\u2019s easy to get adequate nutrition from plant-based food. However it\u2019s important to make sure you\u2019re eating a balanced diet.\u00a0 \u201cIt\u2019s easier to meet your nutrient needs on a vegetarian diet \u2014 you have to be little more careful and strategic on a vegan diet,\u201d says Palmer.<\/p>\n<p>(After all, Oreos and McCormick Bac\u2019n Bits are both vegan, but also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beachbodyondemand.com\/blog\/ultra-processed-foods\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">highly processed<\/a> and lacking in nutritional value.)<\/p>\n<h2>Supplements Vegetarians May Need<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/bod-blog-assets.prod.cd.beachbodyondemand.com\/bod-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/04134445\/types-of-vegetarians-600-supplement.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-168079\" src=\"https:\/\/bod-blog-assets.prod.cd.beachbodyondemand.com\/bod-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/04134445\/types-of-vegetarians-600-supplement.jpg\" alt=\"supplement pill | Types of Vegetarians\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn a plant-based diet, there are five\u00a0micronutrients\u00a0we consider notable nutrients: vitamins B12, D, K2, iodine, and zinc,\u201d explains Hever.<\/p>\n<h3>Vitamin B12<\/h3>\n<p>\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.beachbodyondemand.com\/blog\/foods-high-in-b12\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Vitamin B12<\/a>\u00a0is something that must be supplemented by anyone on a vegan diet and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5130103\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">older adults<\/a>, regardless of their diet.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Vitamin D<\/h3>\n<p>If you\u2019re not drinking milk, where do you get vitamin D? \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.beachbodyondemand.com\/blog\/foods-high-in-vitamin-d\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Vitamin D<\/a>\u00a0is not specific to a vegan diet and may or may not be an issue, based on sun exposure, body fat, and time spent indoors, among other factors,\u201d say Hever. \u201cI have my clients take blood tests to determine whether serum levels of vitamin D are adequate or need supplementation.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Vitamin K2<\/h3>\n<p>\u201cWhile vegans easily consume plenty of vitamin K1 from leafy greens, there is another form,\u00a0vitamin K2, that is also important,\u201d says Hever. \u201cThough it can be found in certain <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beachbodyondemand.com\/blog\/fermented-foods\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fermented foods<\/a>, such as sauerkraut and a Japanese dish called natto, there is evidence that supplementing with K2 may be important for cardiometabolic and bone health.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Iodine and zinc<\/h3>\n<p>\u201cIodine can be consumed via iodized salt or sea vegetables, and zinc is available in legumes, nuts, and seeds, but both of these minerals need attention,\u201d explains Hever.<\/p>\n<h3>Omega-3s<\/h3>\n<p>\u201cFor anyone who does not eat fish, long-chain\u00a0omega-3 fatty acids, specifically EPA and DHA, might need to be supplemented, too,\u201d says Hever. One plant-based source of omega-3s is hemp hearts. Three tablespoons contain about 3 g of these <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beachbodyondemand.com\/blog\/are-you-eating-enough-healthy-fats\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">healthy fats<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Should You Switch to a Plant-Based Diet?<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cThere many benefits associated with eating a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beachbodyondemand.com\/blog\/darin-olien-whole-foods-diet\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">whole food<\/a>, vegan diet,\u201d says Hever.
