And in 2024, the beauty<strong> <\/strong>industry will deliver the tools we <em>all<\/em> need to achieve exactly that.<\/p>\n<p class=\"core-paragraph block-thin text-big\" style=\"\"> Your skin barrier is made up of lipids and cells, and serves as the first line of defense against the elements. It\u2019s responsible for keeping bad stuff, like pollution and bacteria, out, while trapping good stuff, like moisture, in. When the skin barrier is functioning properly, your complexion will likely be hydrated and healthy; when it\u2019s compromised, you become vulnerable to a whole host of concerns. Severe barrier issues can lead to skin conditions like eczema and rosacea, but even a minimally-disrupted barrier can lead to dryness, irritation, inflammation, and acne.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"core-paragraph block-thin text-big\" style=\"\"> \u201cBarrier health has always been a focus for dermatologists, but most people used to think it was only important if you had rosacea, sensitive skin, or eczema,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.drkimdavid.com\/about\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.drkimdavid.com\/about\">David Kim, MD<\/a>, a board-certified dermatologist based in New York. So, companies are becoming more scientific with what they\u2019re talking about to target their products and give consumers what they want.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"core-paragraph block-thin text-big\" style=\"\"> The skin barrier trend has been percolating over the last few years. In early 2022, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/tag\/skinbarrier?lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/tag\/skinbarrier?lang=en\">#skinbarrier<\/a> had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.glossy.co\/beauty\/tiktok-gen-z-skin-barrier-went-mainstream\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.glossy.co\/beauty\/tiktok-gen-z-skin-barrier-went-mainstream\/\">300 million views on TikTok<\/a>, now it has more than 5.7 <em>billion; <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/meetglimpse.com\/trend\/skin-barrier-repair\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/meetglimpse.com\/trend\/skin-barrier-repair\/\">searches for \u201cskin barrier\u201d increased 51 percent<\/a> during that same period; and model Hailey Bieber launched her skin-care line Rhode in 2022 with a <a href=\"https:\/\/clicks.trx-hub.com\/xid\/leafgroup_ca5e0_wellgood?q=https%3A%2F%2Frhodeskin.sjv.io%2Fc%2F2372336%2F1658273%2F19254%3FsubId1%3DSTMSBT-875799%26u%3Dhttps%253A%252F%252Fwww.rhodeskin.com%252Fproducts%252Fbarrier-restore-cream&amp;p=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.wellandgood.com%2Fstrong-skin-barrier-health%2F&amp;event_type=click\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.rhodeskin.com\/products\/barrier-restore-cream\" data-type=\"affiliateLink\" data-aff-intermediate=\"https:\/\/rhodeskin.sjv.io\/c\/2372336\/1658273\/19254?subId1=STMSBT-875799&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.rhodeskin.com%2Fproducts%2Fbarrier-restore-cream\">Barrier Restore Cream<\/a> ($29). A 2023 empirical review posits that the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S1081120623005690\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S1081120623005690\">extreme temperature fluctuations caused by the climate crisis<\/a> are to blame. Ceramides, glycerin, and fatty acids have long been considered the \u201cbig three\u201d for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/skin-barrier-repair\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/skin-barrier-repair\/\">skin barrier repair<\/a> (and have traditionally been staples in lotions and other products from industry heavyweights like Cerave and Cetaphil).
