And as these products make certain components of health information more readily accessible and easier to grasp, the relationship between patient and physician stands to evolve. \u201cDigital devices can help patients take active part in their own health or disease management,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/medicalfuturist.com\/about-bertalan-mesko\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/medicalfuturist.com\/about-bertalan-mesko\/\">Bertalan Mesk\u00f3, PhD,<\/a>\u00a0director of The Medical Futurist Institute, which analyzes the role of digital technologies in shaping the future of health care. \u201cThey can finally become members of their own medical team.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"core-paragraph block-thin text-big\" style=\"\"> Research supports that a number of patients are here for that shift: According to a 2023 study from Yale University, more than\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamanetworkopen\/fullarticle\/2805753\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamanetworkopen\/fullarticle\/2805753\">a quarter of Americans<\/a>\u00a0now use a wearable health-tracking device. (For instance, the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, better known as HIPAA, hasn\u2019t had major updates since 2013, and changes planned for 2023 don\u2019t address wearables.) \u201cThe data world has changed by several orders of magnitude since these laws were passed, and [the laws] largely predate today&#8217;s troves of personalized health data generated from consumer devices and diagnostic tools,\u201d says Stoakes. <\/p>\n<p class=\"core-paragraph block-thin text-big\" style=\"\"> Although some devices send results directly to a connected app, rather than to health-care providers, experts agree that patients shouldn\u2019t be left alone with this information without a physician\u2019s input. That\u2019s partially because not all measurements are always 100 percent accurate\u2014many of these devices still need to be clinically validated in peer-reviewed studies. Also, without a full understanding of what the numbers mean, our minds can quickly start to spin. \u201cThere is already some research about the fact that constant monitoring with self-tracking technologies\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdpi.com\/1660-4601\/20\/18\/6737\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.mdpi.com\/1660-4601\/20\/18\/6737\">can create anxiety, stress, and doubt concerning your health<\/a>,\u201d says Dr. Canali. Dr. Patel points out that a certain value that a tracker spits out might not actually mean anything bad about your health, but without the medical education necessary to interpret that value, patients can panic.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"core-paragraph block-thin text-big\" style=\"\"> For those who have illness anxiety in particular, \u201cthey&#8217;ll get caught up with compulsive reassurance-seeking by constantly checking their pulse [oximeter], or their ECG,\u201d says psychologist and anxiety disorder expert\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/anxietytreatmentcenter.com\/category\/dr-karen-cassiday\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/anxietytreatmentcenter.com\/category\/dr-karen-cassiday\/\">Karen Cassiday, PhD<\/a>. And the number and types of trackers we can access may well continue to expand. \u201cEvery device in and around our lives can become a tool to improve our health.
