When planning meals for the week, few of us account for the calories in alcohol from, say, afterwork beers or celebratory cocktails.<\/p>\n<p>But even the most carefully considered diet plan can struggle when it comes to booze. Macro mathematicians may also be surprised to learn that alcohol \u2014 like carbohydrates, protein, and fat \u2014 is technically the \u201cfourth macro.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Not only can the calorie content of alcoholic beverages vary wildly depending on the type of alcohol and any accompanying mixers or additives, alcohol behaves differently in the body than the other three macros.<\/p>\n<p>Even if you aren\u2019t obsessively counting macros for a strict athletic or weight-loss regimen, your favorite drink may be\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.beachbodyondemand.com\/blog\/the-dos-and-donts-of-alcohol-on-a-diet\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">derailing your efforts<\/a>\u00a0to simply lose or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beachbodyondemand.com\/blog\/how-to-maintain-weight-loss\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">maintain weight<\/a>, too. What is a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.beachbodyondemand.com\/blog\/count-macros-for-weight-loss\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">macro<\/a>, anyway?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMacronutrients are the energy source for our bodies. The body needs <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beachbodyondemand.com\/blog\/what-are-carbs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">carbohydrates<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beachbodyondemand.com\/blog\/what-is-protein\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">protein<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beachbodyondemand.com\/blog\/are-you-eating-enough-healthy-fats\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fat<\/a> for basic functions, cell repair, and growth,\u201d explains <a href=\"https:\/\/nomadistanutrition.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mascha Davis<\/a>, RDN, MPH.<\/p>\n<p>To the macro-conscious, these three substrates have historically been the only macronutrients and the main focus of a diet. As Davis adds, \u201cCarbohydrates are the main and preferred source of energy for our bodies, and fats and protein are used when carbs aren\u2019t available. A balance of macronutrients is ideal for optimal functioning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But in recent years\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/9498312\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">studies have been classifying alcohol differently<\/a>. Despite technically being a source of energy, alcohol doesn\u2019t behave, nor is it processed by the body, quite like either of the other three macronutrients.<\/p>\n<p>Alcohol is absorbed rapidly \u2014 like a carb \u2014 because, unlike food, it doesn\u2019t require digestion. Yet, it has more calories than a carb or protein.<\/p>\n<p>Because it wasn\u2019t a \u201cnecessary\u201d dietary component, many nutritionists didn\u2019t classify alcohol along with the other three macros. But in recent years the concept of the \u201cfourth macro\u201d has gained a strong foothold in health and fitness circles.<\/p>\n<h3>How to calculate alcohol if you\u2019re counting calories or macros<\/h3>\n<p>The difficulty in figuring out how many calories are in alcohol is that there are a lot of mitigating factors that can affect a drink\u2019s calorie count. Not to mention that you need to first clarify what you mean by \u201calcohol.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If you come across information that says one gram of alcohol contains seven calories, it\u2019s important to realize that this refers to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scymed.com\/en\/smnxpn\/pnhpb032.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">pure ethanol<\/a>. We\u2019re not judging your Saturday night, but it\u2019s probably safe to say that you aren\u2019t chugging pure alcohol with friends.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlcohol can be a major source of calories, especially since it\u2019s metabolized differently than the other macronutrients,\u201d says Davis. Beer and wine, for instance, have significantly more calories than pure alcohol (see below).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlcohol can be\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.beachbodyondemand.com\/blog\/what-is-the-mediterranean-diet\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">part of a healthy diet<\/a>\u00a0when enjoyed moderately,\u201d explains Davis. \u201cI recommend lower-calorie drinks prepared with seltzer or on the rocks as opposed to drinks prepared with juice or soda.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>How Many Calories Are in Alcohol?<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/bod-blog-assets.prod.cd.beachbodyondemand.com\/bod-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/06135150\/calories-in-alcohol-600-beverages.jpeg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-164770\" src=\"https:\/\/bod-blog-assets.prod.cd.beachbodyondemand.com\/bod-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/06135150\/calories-in-alcohol-600-beverages.jpeg\" alt=\"Variety of Alcoholic Beverages | Calories in Alcohol\" width=\"599\" height=\"227\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Davis suggests sticking to hard liquor when you can, which delivers the fewest calories and most controllable amounts. Red wine has other health benefits and certainly has a place in an overall healthy regimen, but moderation is key.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlcohol can be part of a healthy diet, but you should be mindful about the amount you drink,\u201d she says. \u201cThe\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/health.gov\/our-work\/nutrition-physical-activity\/dietary-guidelines\/current-dietary-guidelines\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">current guidelines<\/a> for women are one drink per day, and two drinks per day for men. This is what I recommend to my clients who do want to consume alcohol.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When planning out your nutrition, it\u2019s more about knowing yourself and your own habits than memorizing all the factors that go into tracking \u201cthe fourth macro.\u201d So here\u2019s a calorie breakdown, on average, of your favorite beverages.<\/p>\n<p><i>*Martinis can vary wildly depending on type and mixes. A \u201cdry\u201d Martini (with less vermouth) will have a different calorie count than a \u201cwet\u201d Martini (with more vermouth).
