For some, this can mean focusing on nutrition to the extent that it becomes harmful, a phenomenon some experts suggest should become an officially recognized eating disorder: orthorexia nervosa.<\/p>\n<p>There are a number of causes and warning signs associated with orthorexia which are explored below, but if you think you may have a problem with disordered eating, it\u2019s imperative to contact a medical or psychological professional for an evaluation.<\/p>\n<h2>What Is Orthorexia?<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/bod-blog-assets.prod.cd.beachbodyondemand.com\/bod-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/15111258\/orthorexia-600-what-is.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-167578\" src=\"https:\/\/bod-blog-assets.prod.cd.beachbodyondemand.com\/bod-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/15111258\/orthorexia-600-what-is.png\" alt=\"sad woman looking at salad and donuts | Orthorexia\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cOrthorexia is an unhealthy obsession with eating pure or clean foods\u2026 to the point where it negatively impacts an individual\u2019s physical and mental wellbeing,\u201d says\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.progresswellness.com\/about\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Angela Ficken, LICSW<\/a>, a Boston-based therapist.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnlike other eating disorders like anorexia or bulimia, orthorexia is primarily focused on the quality of food consumed rather than the quantity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Officially named in the late 1990s, it\u2019s a condition that\u2019s on the rise.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOrthorexia is something I see fairly regularly in my practice, and I didn\u2019t see it at all 10 years ago,\u201d says\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theweightlosstherapist.com\/about-us\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Candice Seti, Ph.D.<\/a>, a clinical psychologist and certified personal trainer in San Diego.<\/p>\n<h2>Why Is Orthorexia on the Rise?<\/h2>\n<p>So what\u2019s behind the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/34365489\/#:~:text=Research%20conducted%20over%20the%20last,certain%20products%20from%20their%20diet.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">surge in obsessive eating<\/a>? Perhaps unsurprisingly, social media has a lot to answer for.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe obesity epidemic has forced a focus on healthy lifestyles, and social media like Instagram inundates people with pictures of healthy eating, people with six-pack abs, and all sorts of memes telling people pain is gain,\u201d Seti says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt sets people up to develop orthorexia. Whenever there is focus on anything, there will be the opportunity to take it too far.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Although orthorexia nervosa is widely recognized, it\u2019s not an officially diagnosable eating disorder. (Seti expects it will be soon.) Because of this, there are no official diagnostic criteria for orthorexia \u2014 however the condition does have several common traits.<\/p>\n<p>If you suspect you or someone you know has orthorexic tendencies, it\u2019s a good idea to check in with a medical professional.<\/p>\n<h2>Causes of Orthorexia<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/bod-blog-assets.prod.cd.beachbodyondemand.com\/bod-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/15111250\/orthorexia-600-causes.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-167577\" src=\"https:\/\/bod-blog-assets.prod.cd.beachbodyondemand.com\/bod-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/15111250\/orthorexia-600-causes.png\" alt=\"woman filming groceries | Orthorexia\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>So what might cause someone to cross the line from healthy eating into orthorexia? Both internal and external factors can come into play. Some of those internal factors can include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Perfectionism.<\/strong>\u00a0\u201cIndividuals with a tendency toward perfectionism might be drawn to strict dietary rules to gain a sense of control and accomplishment,\u201d says\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mendingheartscounselingmissouri.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Marissa Moore, MA, LPC<\/a>, a Missouri-based licensed professional counselor.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Anxiety.<\/strong> \u201cThe desire to maintain optimal health can escalate into anxiety about consuming anything perceived as unhealthy,\u201d Moore adds.<\/li>\n<li><b>Low self-esteem.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><strong>A need for identity.\u00a0<\/strong>\u201cPeople might adopt extreme diets to feel a sense of belonging within a certain health-conscious community,\u201d Moore says.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>People with a tendency toward obsessive thinking and behaviors also might fixate on the purity of their diet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOrthorexia has many features that parallel the symptoms of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD),\u201d Seti says. \u201cPeople are just consumed with thoughts of food, exercise, and planning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>External factors can also motivate orthorexia. They can include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Media and social influences.<\/strong>\u00a0\u201cThe glorification of clean eating and wellness trends on social media platforms can contribute to developing orthorexic tendencies,\u201d Moore says.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Cultural pressures.\u00a0<\/strong>\u201cSocietal emphasis on thinness and health can lead individuals to pursue unrealistic dietary goals,\u201d she says.<\/li>\n<li><b>Misinformation.\u00a0<\/b>You don\u2019t have to be a credentialed nutrition expert to dispense advice on social media. A lot of what goes viral isn\u2019t supported by science and can even be dangerous.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Warning Signs of Orthorexia<\/h2>\n<p>According to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lighttracknutrition.com\/about-lighttrack-nutrition-bio\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Staci Gulbin, MS, MEd, RDN<\/a>, a registered dietitian nutritionist in Denver, the warning signs of orthorexia can include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Looking obsessively at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beachbodyondemand.com\/blog\/nutrition-facts-label-food-label\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">nutrition labels<\/a> before eating<\/li>\n<li>Labeling foods as \u201cgood\u201d or \u201cbad\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Increasingly cutting certain foods or entire food groups out of your diet or viewing certain foods with fear<\/li>\n<li>Avoiding social situations involving food<\/li>\n<li>Becoming obsessed with what others are eating<\/li>\n<li>Not eating if \u201csafe\u201d foods aren\u2019t available<\/li>\n<li>Spending more time online researching diets and \u201cclean\u201d eating, or on influencer sites that demonize foods (they may use language like \u201csugar is toxic\u201d and \u201cseed oils are poison\u201d)<\/li>\n<li>Increasingly talking about eating habits in conversations with others<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Of course, many of us do these things sometimes. It doesn\u2019t mean you \u201chave\u201d orthorexia \u2014 which, remember, isn\u2019t yet an official clinical diagnosis.<\/p>\n<h2>What Does an Orthorexic Diet Look Like?<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/bod-blog-assets.prod.cd.beachbodyondemand.com\/bod-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/15111243\/orthorexia-600-diet.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-167576\" src=\"https:\/\/bod-blog-assets.prod.cd.beachbodyondemand.com\/bod-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/15111243\/orthorexia-600-diet.png\" alt=\"woman picking at broccoli | Orthorexia\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cAn orthorexic diet may cut out multiple food groups, be very limited to \u201csafe\u201d foods, and be very restricting,\u201d Gulbin says. \u201cOften orthorexic diets cut out anything that contains sugar, anything packaged, or anything eaten out in restaurants aside from \u2018whole\u2019 foods.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The condition can look different from person to person. \u201cSometimes it can start with cutting out sugars, then slowly cutting out desserts, and then cutting out breads, pastas, and other starch carbohydrates altogether,\u201d says\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ascendchc.com\/suren-chiu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Suren Chiu, RDN, LDN, CPT<\/a>, a registered dietitian nutritionist and certified personal trainer in Chicago.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor others, it can be limiting fats to a certain amount on the label, significantly limiting what the person can eat. It\u2019s not uncommon for this to be paired with exercising, in a way that can also be obsessive.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Risks of Orthorexia<\/h2>\n<p>Orthorexia is different from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.beachbodyondemand.com\/blog\/how-to-eat-healthy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">prioritizing good nutrition<\/a>. \u201cThis lifestyle can deprive the orthorexic person of essential nutrients needed for optimal health,\u201d Gulbin says.<\/p>\n<p>Cutting out a large variety of foods can lead to a number of consequences, according to Gulbin:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Heightened risk for nutrient deficiencies and malnutrition<\/li>\n<li>Strained personal relationships<\/li>\n<li>Mental and emotional health issues<\/li>\n<li>Diminished overall quality of life<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Not to mention the burden imposed by orthorexic eating. \u201cCounting every calorie and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beachbodyondemand.com\/blog\/count-macros-for-weight-loss\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">macro<\/a> and reading every nutrition and ingredient label can become exhausting and debilitating,\u201d Gulbin says.<\/p>\n<h2>What to Do About Orthorexia<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/bod-blog-assets.prod.cd.beachbodyondemand.com\/bod-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/15111234\/orthorexia-600-nutritionist.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-167575\" src=\"https:\/\/bod-blog-assets.prod.cd.beachbodyondemand.com\/bod-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/15111234\/orthorexia-600-nutritionist.png\" alt=\"nutritionist talking to patient | Orthorexia\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>If you or someone you know is exhibiting orthorexic traits, consult your healthcare provider or a mental-health professional.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI always encourage people to seek professional help sooner rather than later,\u201d Seti says.<\/p>\n<p>Treatment of orthorexia primarily focuses on breaking the all-or-nothing mentality, while building self-esteem and facing fears.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCatching it and intervening early is definitely the most effective route before any of these new, unhealthy behaviors get rooted.
