{"id":8803,"date":"2023-11-14T20:10:12","date_gmt":"2023-11-14T13:10:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/loudhdtv.com\/?p=8803"},"modified":"2023-11-14T20:10:12","modified_gmt":"2023-11-14T13:10:12","slug":"is-it-safe-to-take-weight-loss-pills","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/loudhdtv.com\/?p=8803","title":{"rendered":"Is It Safe to Take Weight-Loss Pills?\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Why don\u2019t more people take the weight-loss medications currently on the market?<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Despite the myriad menus of FDA-approved medications for weight loss, they\u2019ve only been <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26193062\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">prescribed<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> for about 1 in 50 patients with obesity. We tend to worship medical magic bullets in the United States, so what gives? As I discuss in my video <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/video\/friday-favorites-are-weight-loss-supplements-safe-and-effective\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Friday Favorites: Are Weight-Loss Supplements Safe and Effective?<\/strong><\/a>, o<span data-contrast=\"auto\">ne of the reasons anti-obesity drugs are so \u201chighly <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25529104\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">stigmatized<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201d<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> is that, historically, they\u2019ve been anything but magical and the bullets have been blanks\u2014or worse.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233279&quot;:true}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">To date, most weight-loss drugs that were initially <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4408373\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">approved<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> as safe have since been pulled from the market for unforeseen side effects that turned them into a \u201cthreat to public health.\u201d As you may remember from my video <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/video\/brown-fat-losing-weight-through-thermogenesis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Brown Fat: Losing Weight Through Thermogenesis<\/span><\/b><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, it all started with DNP, a pesticide with a promise to safely melt away fat that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC1760503\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">melted<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> away people\u2019s eyesight instead. (That actually helped <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/17475379\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">lead<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> to the passage of the landmark Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act in 1938.) Thanks to the internet, DNP has made a comeback with \u201cpredictably lethal results.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Then <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/18445805\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">came<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> the amphetamines. Currently, more than half a million Americans may be <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/store.samhsa.gov\/product\/Key-Substance-Use-and-Mental-Health-Indicators-in-the-United-States-\/sma17-5044\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">addicted<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> to amphetamines like crystal meth, but the \u201coriginal amphetamine epidemic was <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/18445805\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">generated<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> by the pharmaceutical industry and medical profession.\u201d By the 1960s, drug companies were churning out about 80,000 kilos of amphetamines a year, which is nearly enough for a weekly dose for every man, woman, and child in the United States. Billions of doses a year were prescribed for weight loss, and weight-loss clinics were raking in huge profits. A dispensing diet doctor could buy 100,000 amphetamine tablets for less than $100, then turn around and sell them to patients for $12,000.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">At a 1970 Senate Hearing, Senator Thomas Dodd (father of \u201cDodd-Frank\u201d Senator Chris Dodd) <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/BF02695852\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">suggested<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> that America\u2019s speed freak problem \u201cwas no by means an \u2018accidental development\u2019: \u2018Multihundred million dollar advertising budgets, frequently the most costly ingredient in the price of a pill, have, pill by pill, led, coaxed and seduced post-World War II generations into the \u2018freaked-out\u2019 drug culture\u2026\u2019\u201d I\u2019ll leave <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/30657529\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">drawing<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> the Big Pharma parallels to the current opioid crisis as an exercise for the viewer.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Aminorex was a widely-prescribed appetite suppressant before it was <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/29508628\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">pulled<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> for causing lung damage. Eighteen million Americans were on fen-phen before it was <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/9414332\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">pulled<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> from the market for causing severe damage to heart valves. Meridia was <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/20818901\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">pulled<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> for heart attacks and strokes, Acomplia was <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/18022033\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">pulled<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> for psychiatric side effects, including suicide, and the list <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23320052\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">goes<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> on, as you can see below and at 2:51 in my <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/video\/are-weight-loss-pills-safe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">video<\/span><\/b><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-98369\" src=\"https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2023\/11\/2-51.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1080\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2023\/11\/2-51.png 1920w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2023\/11\/2-51-960x540.png 960w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2023\/11\/2-51-1024x576.png 1024w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2023\/11\/2-51-768x432.png 768w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2023\/11\/2-51-1536x864.png 1536w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2023\/11\/2-51-480x270.png 480w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2023\/11\/2-51-1200x675.png 1200w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2023\/11\/2-51-720x405.png 720w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2023\/11\/2-51-540x304.png 540w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1920px) 100vw, 1920px\"\/><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The fen-phen debacle <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26811245\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">resulted<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> in \u201csome of the largest litigation pay-outs ever seen in the pharmaceutical industry, with individual amounts of up to US$200,000 and a total value of ~US$14 billion,\u201d but that\u2019s all baked into the formula. If you <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26054325\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">read<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> the journal <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">PharmacoEconomics<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> (and who doesn\u2019t!), you may be aware that a new weight-loss drug may injure and kill so many that \u201cexpected litigation cost\u201d could exceed $80 million, but Big Pharma consultants estimate that if it\u2019s successful, the drug could bring in more than $100 million, so do the math.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">What does work for weight loss?
