A 2022 survey conducted by the fitness brand Life Time found that <a href=\"https:\/\/experiencelife.lifetime.life\/article\/survey-says-parents-want-more-active-time-for-and-with-their-kids\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/experiencelife.lifetime.life\/article\/survey-says-parents-want-more-active-time-for-and-with-their-kids\/\">89 percent of parents<\/a> enjoyed spending time participating in outdoor recreation and sports with their kids, while 80 percent said they\u2019d like to inspire their young ones to do more physical activity to build their children&#8217;s fitness. So, how <em>do <\/em>we nurture a love of movement in the next generation?<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a critical question because there\u2019s evidence to suggest that our current approach to raising active kids may not be working. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that children aged 6 to 17 exercise <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/healthyschools\/physicalactivity\/guidelines_backup.htm#:~:text=Children%20and%20adolescents%20should%20have,least%203%20days%20a%20week.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/healthyschools\/physicalactivity\/guidelines_backup.htm#:~:text=Children%20and%20adolescents%20should%20have,least%203%20days%20a%20week.\">at least one hour per day<\/a>, but only <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/healthyschools\/physicalactivity\/facts.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/healthyschools\/physicalactivity\/facts.htm\">about 24 percent of kids meet this criteria<\/a>. Children\u2019s fitness regimens have been <a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamapediatrics\/fullarticle\/2794075\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" class=\"no-underline citation\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamapediatrics\/fullarticle\/2794075\"><span>slowly declining in the years since the pandemic<\/span><sup>1<\/sup><\/a>, even though the physical advantages of activity are undeniable. Working out from a young age may <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/healthyschools\/physicalactivity\/facts.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/healthyschools\/physicalactivity\/facts.htm\">stave off heart disease, cancer, and osteoporosis<\/a>, among other health issues. And, when it comes to the mental side of things, regular exercise <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC1470658\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" class=\"no-underline citation\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC1470658\/\"><span>has been found<\/span><sup>2<\/sup><\/a> to reduce anxiety, boost mood, and improve self-esteem and cognitive function, and also <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/37550097\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" class=\"no-underline citation\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/37550097\/\"><span>help kids cope with stress<\/span><sup>3<\/sup><\/a>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"related-content \" style=\"\" data-module-init=\"related-content\" data-module-immediate=\"\" v-cloak=\"\">\n<div class=\"related-content__wrapper \" v-cloak=\"\" :class=\"{'is-loaded':isLoaded}\">\n<p> <span class=\"inline pr-6 text-seafoam-dark\">Related Stories<\/span> <\/p>\n<p> <related-content class=\"related-content__links\" parent-article-permalink=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/childrens-fitness-mindset\/\" current-title=\"How Parents Can Give Their Kids a Healthy, Joyful Relationship to Fitness\" current-image=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/GettyImages-childrens-fitness-425x285_418x278_true_70.webp\" v-on:parsely-posts-loaded=\"onPostsLoaded\" start-date=\"2023-05-11\" tag=\"div\" inline-template=\"\" url=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/childrens-fitness-mindset\/\" secret=\"w5ztterVB03LGZJLfXS0hf3EvQBuFFIWew9hmVQxthU\" apikey=\"wellandgood.com\" limit=\"3\"> <\/p>\n<div>\n<div class=\"related-content__card mb-[10px] sm:mb-[20px]\" :class=\"{'related-content__card--full':posts.length === 1}\" v-for=\"(post, key) in posts\"> <a v-on:click.prevent=\"trackLinkGA($event, key)\" :href=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/childrens-fitness-mindset\/post.url\" data-url-source=\"related-content\" class=\"related-content__link\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"\"> <\/p>\n<div class=\"related-content__card--image bg-tan\" :style=\"{ backgroundImage: 'url(' + post.image_url + ')' }\"> <img :src=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/childrens-fitness-mindset\/post.image_url\" :alt=\"post.title\"\/> <\/div>\n<p> <\/a>  <\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p> <\/related-content> <\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>However, when it comes to instilling a love of running, biking, swimming, and other activities into our young ones, clinical health psychologist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/sarahnicolebostan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/sarahnicolebostan\">Sarah-Nicole Bostan, PhD<\/a>, says it\u2019s more about teaching them to love the feeling than to love what the workout can \u201cdo\u201d for them. \u201cTeaching children to appreciate their bodies and all the opportunities a strong, agile body affords\u2014irrelevant of weight or shape\u2014lays the groundwork for a lifelong positive relationship with movement, even in a world where the emphasis is often misplaced on physical outcomes or appearance,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<h2>Shaping your children&#8217;s fitness mindset<\/h2>\n<p>Here are four ways parents can instill a positive relationship with movement in their kids.<\/p>\n<h3>1. Lead by example<\/h3>\n<p>Research shows that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2901496\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" class=\"no-underline citation\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2901496\/\"><span>children imitate their parents<\/span><sup>4<\/sup><\/a> to practice new skills and operate in society. So, a child who sees their parents moving may well be inspired to join in. \u201cAccording to social learning theory, children largely acquire new behaviors through observation and imitation,\u201d explains Dr. Bostan. \u201cThat means caregivers aren\u2019t doing their kids any favors by skipping their own self-care or daily movement routines. In fact, children will learn if they are invited to be active participants [in sport] and allowed to see what\u2019s happening in a healthy relationship with exercise.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>How you talk about your daily dose of movement also plays into modeling fitness for your child. If you hope to raise a human being who loves to sweat, talking about why <em>you <\/em>love it can go far. Just be sure to lead with the feeling-forward values of exercise (rather than metrics). For example, \u201cI love how free I feel when I\u2019m swimming in the pool.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Molly Prospect, a runner living in Hartford, Connecticut, brings her 18-month-old son to watch races, including his dad\u2019s marathons. \u201cWe try to keep him an active participant in the marathon process, whether it is supporting my husband on training runs, going to the expo, or ringing cowbells on race day,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>But you don\u2019t need to run 26.2 miles to show your child the power of sport. Apart from tagging along for her races, Brady also makes sure her daughters have plenty of movement role models around them to demonstrate what children&#8217;s fitness can look like at all ages. \u201cWe take them to the local high school girls\u2019 volleyball and basketball games whenever we can,\u201d says Brady. \u201cAt this point, they only last about 30 minutes, but I think it\u2019s important and fun for them to see other girls be active and work as a team together.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>2. Keep movement playful and flexible<\/h3>\n<p>While there are certainly valuable lessons in taking sport seriously\u2014like the importance of resiliency, dedication, and showing up for your teammates\u2014emphasizing movement as play ultimately <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC7593334\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" class=\"no-underline citation\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC7593334\/\"><span>creates a lifelong love of getting sweaty<\/span><sup>5<\/sup><\/a>. And the latter outcome is what will ultimately support a healthy relationship with movement. \u201cSometimes children who are naturally athletic are encouraged to pursue hobbies that lend themselves to more movement, while children who may not appear to be athletic\u2014or show difficulty with balance, coordination, and speed\u2014are dissuaded from pursuing organized sports,\u201d says Dr. Bostan. \u201cIn reality, both groups will benefit from daily movement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pediatrician Sarah Lester, a mother of four kids between the ages of 16 and 22, believes that sports practices should feel like a series of games (especially before they reach high school age). \u201cUltimately those games result in a lot of movement,\u201d she points out. \u201cIf you tell a young kid to go out and run a mile, it will be the rare kid that will keep coming back for more.\u201d On the other hand, games like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.playworks.org\/game-library\/capture-the-flag\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.playworks.org\/game-library\/capture-the-flag\/\">capture the flag<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.playworks.org\/game-library\/jump-ropedouble-dutch\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.playworks.org\/game-library\/jump-ropedouble-dutch\/\"> jumping ropes<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.playworks.org\/game-library\/ants-on-a-log-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.playworks.org\/game-library\/ants-on-a-log-2\/\">ants on a log<\/a> all encourage running and agility without the pressure of a formal sport.<\/p>\n<p><em>Got a budding dancer at home? While it may be tempting to encourage your little one to emulate whatever movement speaks to you, it\u2019s important to let them dabble\u2014and drop things that don\u2019t interest them. \u201cYou never know what kids will like, and often the social part of the movement is the part that they really want,\u201d says Lester. \u201cIt may be a one-and-done season. It may be the beginning of a new passion.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>3. Avoid creating a \u201cmovement versus screens\u201d mentality<\/h3>\n<p>\u201cAs a parent, the challenge today is to find balance between physical activity and the draw of technology,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/hyrosario\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/hyrosario\/\">Hy Rosario<\/a>, director of outdoor and kids&#8217; footwear at <a href=\"https:\/\/clicks.trx-hub.com\/xid\/leafgroup_ca5e0_wellgood?q=https%3A%2F%2Fclick.linksynergy.com%2Fdeeplink%3Fid%3DvTvGS%2F1ZeSQ%26mid%3D43729%26u1%3DSTMSLS-1131635%26murl%3Dhttps%253A%252F%252Fwww.hoka.com%252Fen%252Fca%252F&amp;p=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.wellandgood.com%2Fchildrens-fitness-mindset%2F&amp;event_type=click\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.hoka.com\/en\/ca\/\" data-type=\"affiliateLink\" data-aff-intermediate=\"https:\/\/click.linksynergy.com\/deeplink?id=vTvGS\/1ZeSQ&amp;mid=43729&amp;u1=STMSLS-1131635&amp;murl=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.hoka.com%2Fen%2Fca%2F\">Hoka<\/a>, who helped design the brand\u2019s kids sneaker. \u201cOne great thing about the pandemic was that it truly forced families to get outside, whether it was a simple family walk to give the puppy their workout or going on a hike to work out some sweat. In many ways, families were directed to find ways to keep their mental, emotional, and physical health in check.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As children\u2019s lives become increasingly intertwined with screens, it\u2019s important to prioritize family outings in the outdoors while keeping a neutral dialogue about technology. \u201cMeeting kids where they\u2019re at is critical for creating healthy habits that stick, as well as praising efforts early and often, whatever the outcome,\u201d says Dr. Bostan. For example, she says that if your child loves video games, you may want to pitch a \u201clive-action outdoor video game\u201d and invite their friends. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/fitness-video-games\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/fitness-video-games\/\">Children&#8217;s fitness video games<\/a> can also be a great way to integrate screens and movement.<\/p>\n<p>What you don\u2019t want to do is create an antagonistic relationship with technology that positions <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/video-games-mental-health-covid-19\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/video-games-mental-health-covid-19\/\">tech as the \u201cbad\u201d thing<\/a> and exercise as the \u201cgood\u201d thing. In time, this approach could lead to your child compartmentalizing screen time as an \u201caward\u201d and fitness as a \u201cpunishment.\u201d Instead, encourage your child to participate in a wide array of appropriate activities both online and IRL.<\/p>\n<h3>4. Don\u2019t force it<\/h3>\n<p>Full stop: You can\u2019t make someone enjoy something. All you can do is introduce your child to an activity and see how they respond. Even though Prospect\u2019s son is less than 2 years old, she\u2019s already considered what she will do if he doesn\u2019t have the same passion for sport that she does. \u201cI think I would respect his decision but remind him that movement usually makes us all feel good,\u201d she says. \u201cI would encourage him to come for a walk with me, or throw a ball for the dog.
