So, what exactly does &#8220;ultra-processed food&#8221; mean?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUltra-processed foods (UPFs) can be loaded with ingredients, many of which are\u00a0sugar, salt, fat, and other substances derived or extracted from real food (think \u2018made in the lab\u2019) and\/or additives such as artificial colors, flavors, and preservatives,\u201d Shapiro explains.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Vinjamoori adds that ultra-processed foods lack the essential nutrients we need to maintain optimal health (ie. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mindbodygreen.com\/articles\/how-to-eat-more-protein\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"mbg-track-event\" data-track-event-types=\"click\" data-track-type=\"article-link\" data-track-prop-element-id=\"in-body-link\" data-track-prop-label=\"page_type | element_id\" data-track-prop-category=\"Link\" data-track-prop-link=\"https:\/\/www.mindbodygreen.com\/articles\/how-to-eat-more-protein\" rel=\"noopener\">protein<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mindbodygreen.com\/articles\/high-fiber-foods\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"mbg-track-event\" data-track-event-types=\"click\" data-track-type=\"article-link\" data-track-prop-element-id=\"in-body-link\" data-track-prop-label=\"page_type | element_id\" data-track-prop-category=\"Link\" data-track-prop-link=\"https:\/\/www.mindbodygreen.com\/articles\/high-fiber-foods\" rel=\"noopener\">fiber<\/a>, etc.). This is which is why consuming more UPFs than whole or minimally processed foods can pose an overall health risk.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUltra-processed foods are also nutrient-poor, meaning they lack essential vitamins, minerals, and other beneficial compounds, and consistently consuming these foods can lead to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mindbodygreen.com\/articles\/protein-deficiency-symptoms\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"mbg-track-event\" data-track-event-types=\"click\" data-track-type=\"article-link\" data-track-prop-element-id=\"in-body-link\" data-track-prop-label=\"page_type | element_id\" data-track-prop-category=\"Link\" data-track-prop-link=\"https:\/\/www.mindbodygreen.com\/articles\/protein-deficiency-symptoms\" rel=\"noopener\">nutritional deficiencies<\/a> and inflammation, which can shorten one&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mindbodygreen.com\/articles\/how-to-eat-for-longer-life-from-healthspan-focused-md\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"mbg-track-event\" data-track-event-types=\"click\" data-track-type=\"article-link\" data-track-prop-element-id=\"in-body-link\" data-track-prop-label=\"page_type | element_id\" data-track-prop-category=\"Link\" data-track-prop-link=\"https:\/\/www.mindbodygreen.com\/articles\/how-to-eat-for-longer-life-from-healthspan-focused-md\" rel=\"noopener\">lifespan<\/a> and lead to obesity and a variety of diseases,\u201d Vinjamoori states.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This level of processing is often used to boost sales of the product and preserve its shelf life, as well as bring down the cost of production.\u00a0According to the <em>BMJ<\/em> analysis, addiction to these foods has become just as prevalent as addiction to other legal substances like alcohol and tobacco.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA recent analysis of two systematic reviews including 281 studies from 36 different countries found the overall pooled prevalence of food addiction using [the Yale Food Addiction Scale] was 14% in adults and 12% in children,\u201d the authors state.\u00a0This prevalence is quite similar to the levels of addiction seen for other legal substances in adults (noting 14% for alcohol and 18% for tobacco), but the level of implied addiction in children is unprecedented, they say.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/383\/bmj-2023-075354\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"mbg-track-event\" data-track-event-types=\"click\" data-track-type=\"article-link\" data-track-prop-element-id=\"in-body-link\" data-track-prop-label=\"page_type | element_id\" data-track-prop-category=\"Link\" data-track-prop-link=\"https:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/383\/bmj-2023-075354\" rel=\"noopener\">full analysis<\/a>, the authors dive deep into the health and longevity implications of this addiction, including higher rates of chronic diseases, mental health and cognition concerns, and worse treatment outcomes.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-type=\"_mgwidget\" data-widget-id=\"1675549\">\r\n<\/div>\r\n<script>(function(w,q){w[q]=w[q]||[];w[q].push([\"_mgc.load\"])})(window,\"_mgq\");\r\n<\/script>\r\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Plenty of foods are processed before consumption\u2014they can be frozen, roasted, spiced, and more.
