This is a small perennial shrub that contains a white crystalline compound called stevioside, which is used as an herbal sweetener.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/fdc.nal.usda.gov\/fdc-app.html#\/food-details\/170679\/nutrients\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">One gram of stevia<\/a> has nearly zero calories and just under one gram of carbs.<\/p>\n<p>And a little goes a long way: Stevia is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC8600158\/#:~:text=Stevia%20sweetness%20is%20mainly%20due,a%20very%20popular%20sugar%20substitute.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">200\u2013300 times sweeter<\/a>\u00a0than table sugar, says\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/haileycrean.com\/\">Hailey Crean, MS, RD, CDE, CSOWM<\/a>, a registered dietitian based in Boston.<\/p>\n<h2><strong data-redactor-tag=\"strong\">What Is Stevia Used For?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Stevia is used as a\u00a0sugar substitute\u00a0in a range of places, from beverages to baked goods.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStevia is versatile,\u201d says\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ihearthealthrd.com\/about\/\">Brocha Soloff, RD, CDN<\/a>, a registered dietitian based in New York City. \u201cYou can use it in your morning coffee, to make muffins, or for smoothies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Stevia is commonly found in:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong data-redactor-tag=\"strong\">Diet or low-sugar sodas and beverages<\/strong>, including juices and teas.<\/li>\n<li><strong data-redactor-tag=\"strong\"><b data-redactor-tag=\"b\">Sugar alternatives<\/b>.<\/strong> These may come in boxes or packets and are sold under brand names like\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2VypwyK\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Truvia<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2wxh6zn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">SweetLeaf<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2MxZPKv\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pure Via<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong data-redactor-tag=\"strong\">Low- or no-fat and low- or no-sugar products, <\/strong>including ice cream and yogurts.<\/li>\n<li><strong data-redactor-tag=\"strong\">Nutritional supplements. <\/strong>Stevia is found in a range of supplements, from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.teambeachbody.com\/shop\/us\/d\/recover-BBPRecoverAllFlavors?locale=en_US&amp;ICID=BLOG_RECOVER&amp;refsource=Blog\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">protein powders<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.teambeachbody.com\/shop\/us\/d\/energize-BBPEnergizeAllFlavors?ICID=BLOG_ENERGIZE&amp;refsource=Blog\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pre-workout formulas<\/a>. Here\u2019s how:<\/p>\n<h3>1. Stevia could help you consume less added sugar<\/h3>\n<p>Nutritionists agree that, by and large, Americans are eating too much\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.beachbodyondemand.com\/blog\/natural-sugar-vs-added-sugar\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">added sugar<\/a>, which can increase several health risks.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yourethecure.org\/added_sugar_adds_risk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">American Heart Association recommends<\/a> that women eat no more than six teaspoons of added sugar a day and that men have no more than nine teaspoons. If you take your morning coffee with two packets of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beachbodyondemand.com\/blog\/other-names-for-sugar\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">real sugar<\/a>, and you drink two cups a day, you\u2019re well on your way to that limit \u2014 before you consume <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beachbodyondemand.com\/blog\/how-much-sugar-a-day-breakfast\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">anything else<\/a> that day.<\/p>\n<p>Substituting stevia for table sugar can be an easy way to cut down on added sugar (depending on the rest of your diet).<\/p>\n<h3>2. Stevia can help you consume fewer calories<\/h3>\n<p>Theoretically, if you\u2019re consuming fewer calories from sugar, that could help you create a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beachbodyondemand.com\/blog\/calorie-deficit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">calorie deficit<\/a> that can contribute to weight loss.<\/p>\n<p>In a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/jn\/article\/148\/7\/1186S\/5049670\">2018 review of studies<\/a>\u00a0published in the\u00a0<em data-redactor-tag=\"em\">Journal of Nutrition<\/em>, one study looked at stevia\u2019s effect on satiety and calorie consumption.<\/p>\n<p>While it found no effect on satiety, it did suggest that stevia \u201csignificantly decreased\u201d calorie consumption: People who ate two small low-calorie meals sweetened with stevia before an all-you-can eat lunch and dinner consumed 309 fewer calories over the course of the day.<\/p>\n<p>However, clinical trials exploring the direct effect of stevia on body weight are lacking.<\/p>\n<p>But it\u2019s important to use stevia in the context of your\u00a0<em data-redactor-tag=\"em\">total<\/em> diet, and avoid the temptation to replace these saved calories with bigger portions or unhealthy foods.
