The national holiday is thought of as a portal for our deceased relatives to rejoin us in the living world. Traditionally, we create <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/how-to-make-altar-home-design\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/how-to-make-altar-home-design\/\"><em>altares<\/em><\/a> (altars) and embellish them with marigold flowers along with our family member\u2019s favorite food or drink, which we collectively call <em>ofrendas<\/em> (offerings).<\/div>\n<p>Hardcore <em>D\u00eda de Muertos<\/em> observers will also don <em>Ca<\/em><em>trina<\/em> makeup, which is skeletal makeup that honors the connection between life and death. This year, for the first time ever, I put on a full <em>Catrina <\/em>face\u2014and it made me feel closer to my loved ones who have passed.<\/p>\n<p>My<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/first-generation-guilt-traveling\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/first-generation-guilt-traveling\/\"> parents are both Mexican immigrants<\/a>. In an effort to assimilate, which made life less difficult for them in the States, they shed traditions like <em>Dia de Muertos<\/em>. This meant that growing up, we didn\u2019t have <em>altares <\/em>or<em> ofrendas <\/em>in our home.<\/p>\n<p>As an adult, I struggled to find ways to connect to loved ones who had passed on. It made me sad to think about the fact that their physical presence had ceased to exist. When I realized that <em>Dia de Muertos<\/em> is a chance to honor their spiritual essence, I felt compelled to try the <em>Catrina<\/em> look. And boy am I glad I did.<\/p>\n<h2>How the Mexican <em>Catrina<\/em> came to symbolize <em>D\u00eda de Muertos<\/em><\/h2>\n<p>According to Guillermina Ibarra Cede\u00f1o\u2014a tour guide born and raised in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, where the holiday is widely celebrated (and where I spent this year&#8217;s event, hosted by the <a href=\"https:\/\/clicks.trx-hub.com\/xid\/leafgroup_ca5e0_wellgood?q=https%3A%2F%2Fgo.skimresources.com%3Fid%3D104860X1561639%26xs%3D1%26xcust%3DSTMSBT-1130203%26url%3Dhttps%253A%252F%252Fwww.marriott.com%252Fen-us%252Fhotels%252Fpvrmx-marriott-puerto-vallarta-resort-and-spa%252Foverview%252F&amp;p=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.wellandgood.com%2Fcatrina-makeup%2F&amp;event_type=click\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" rel=\"sponsored\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.marriott.com\/en-us\/hotels\/pvrmx-marriott-puerto-vallarta-resort-and-spa\/overview\/\" data-type=\"affiliateLink\" data-aff-intermediate=\"https:\/\/go.skimresources.com?id=104860X1561639&amp;xs=1&amp;xcust=STMSBT-1130203&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.marriott.com%2Fen-us%2Fhotels%2Fpvrmx-marriott-puerto-vallarta-resort-and-spa%2Foverview%2F\">Marriott Puerto Vallarta<\/a>)\u2014the Day of the Dead dates back to pre-Hispanic times. However, the <em>Catrina <\/em>is a more recent addition to the festivities.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1130245 js-inline-lazy-load\" alt=\"\" width=\"1125\" height=\"1668\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/IMG_08DC6D306F67-1_falsexfalse_true_70.webp\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur ancestors didn\u2019t use skulls or paint themselves. That happened around the 1920s,\u201d says Ibarra Cede\u00f1o. \u201cPeople started doing that because of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.posada-art-foundation.com\/about-posada\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener sponsored\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.posada-art-foundation.com\/about-posada\">Jos\u00e9 Guadalupe Posada<\/a>. He painted a <a href=\"https:\/\/thegracemuseum.org\/learn\/2020-11-2-la-catrina-a-history\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/thegracemuseum.org\/learn\/2020-11-2-la-catrina-a-history\/\">famous mural<\/a>l that shows the <em>Catrina<\/em> as a skeleton. As artist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/fabyfdzpv\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" rel=\"sponsored\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/fabyfdzpv\/\">Fabiola Fernandez<\/a> applied my makeup, I felt as though I could feel my ancestors in the room with me.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, my mother\u2019s brother\u2014Joel Arroyo Barreto, who was also my godfather\u2014died unexpectedly. Candidly, it was one of the hardest losses that I\u2019ve ever been dealt. He was the proudest Mexican I have ever known, and the biggest reason I even wanted to do my <em>Catrina<\/em> makeup in the first place.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1130247 js-inline-lazy-load\" alt=\"\" width=\"1170\" height=\"1560\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/IMG_9299-2_falsexfalse_true_70.webp\"\/><\/p>\n<p>As Fernandez painted my face white, I all but heard my <em>padrino<\/em> (Spanish for godfather) speaking to me. Obviously, he was not physically in the room with me, but I truly feel like I channeled a message from him. \u201c<em>Hechale ganas<\/em>,\u201d he told me, encouraging me to keep working hard.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you feel the wind during day of the dead, that\u2019s the presence of your loved ones,\u201d says Ibarra Cede\u00f1o. \u201cThink about when someone walks by you. You can feel the whoosh of air. That\u2019s what happens when our family members visit us.\u201d And the wind was <em>blowing<\/em> on November 2nd.<\/p>\n<p>While I walked around the Puerto Vallarta cemetery in my <em>Catrina<\/em> get-up, my grandmothers\u2014Guadalupe Camacho Le\u00f3n (aka Lupita) and Vicenta Arroyo Barreto (aka Chenta)\u2014paid me a visit, too.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1130251 js-inline-lazy-load\" alt=\"\" width=\"1170\" height=\"937\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/2_falsexfalse_true_70.webp\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The former, who\u2019s my paternal grandma, told me how pretty I looked. She also mentioned how proud she was of me for embracing my roots and never forgetting where I come from. My maternal grandmother was never a woman of many words, at least not with me. But that day, I could see her in my mind\u2019s eye\u2014smiling at me from a distance.<\/p>\n<p>I may not have grown up observing <em>D\u00eda de Muertos<\/em>, but I know for a fact that I\u2019ll continue celebrating it until it\u2019s my time to go.
