{"id":8552,"date":"2023-11-02T19:10:40","date_gmt":"2023-11-02T12:10:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/loudhdtv.com\/?p=8552"},"modified":"2023-11-02T19:10:40","modified_gmt":"2023-11-02T12:10:40","slug":"does-chewing-gum-burn-calories","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/loudhdtv.com\/?p=8552","title":{"rendered":"Does Chewing Gum Burn Calories?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">What are the effects of chewing gum on hunger and appetite?<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cHorace Fletcher,\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/7011453\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">proclaimed<\/span><\/b><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> one of his obituaries in 1919, \u201ctaught the world to chew.\u201d Also known as the \u201cGreat Masticator,\u201d Fletcher was a health reformer who <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/21316411\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">popularized<\/span><\/b><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> the idea of chewing each mouthful more than 32 times\u2014\u201conce for every tooth.\u201d It wasn\u2019t put to the test, though, until nearly a century later. In that study, participants were told to <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">eat<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> pasta until they felt \u201ccomfortably full\u201d and were randomized to chew each mouthful either 10 times or 35 times before swallowing. The subjects were told the study was about the effects of chewing on mood, but that was just a ruse. The researchers really wanted to know whether prolonged chewing reduced food intake. And, as it turned out, those who chewed more felt full earlier than those who chewed less, such that they ended up eating about a third of a cup less pasta overall.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">If chewing suppresses the appetite in some way, what about chewing gum as a weight-loss strategy? As I discuss in my video <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/video\/how-many-calories-do-you-burn-chewing-gum\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">How Many Calories Do You Burn Chewing Gum?<\/a><\/strong><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, an article entitled \u201cBenefits of Chewing Gum\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/journals.lww.com\/nutritiontodayonline\/Abstract\/2008\/03000\/Benefits_of_Chewing_Gum__Oral_Health_and_Beyond.9.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">suggested<\/span><\/b><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> as much by saying that it \u201cmay be a useful behavior modification tool in appetite control and weight management,\u201d but it was co-written by the executive director of The Wrigley Science Institute and a senior manager at the Wm Wrigley Jr Company. Why don\u2019t we see what the <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">unbiased<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> science says?<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Big Gum likes to point to a letter published in 1999 in <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The New England Journal of Medicine<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. In it, Mayo Clinic researchers <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/10627208\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">claimed<\/span><\/b><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> that chewing gum could burn 11 calories an hour. Critics <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25794237\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">pointed<\/span><\/b><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> to the fact that they didn\u2019t really test \u201ctypical\u201d gum chewing; they instead tested chewing the equivalent of four sticks of gum \u201cat a very rapid cadence.\u201d Specifically, the participants were told to chew at a frequency of exactly 100 Hertz (Hz) \u201cwith the aid of a metronome\u201d for 12 minutes. That seemed to burn 2.2 calories, hence, potentially 11 calories an hour.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">One might have had more confidence in the Mayo scientists\u2019 conclusion had they not lacked a fundamental understanding of basic units. As <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.merriam-webster.com\/dictionary\/hertz\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">defined<\/span><\/b><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> by <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Merriam-Webster<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, hertz is a unit of frequency equal to one cycle per second, so 100 Hz would mean 100 chews per <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">second<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. (That <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">would<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> be a very rapid cadence!) If it\u2019s true that 11 calories may be burned an hour, though, that means you could burn more calories actively chewing gum while sitting in a chair than you would if you weren\u2019t chewing gum while upright at a standing desk.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In fact, as you can see in the graph below and at 2:24 in my <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/video\/how-many-calories-do-you-burn-chewing-gum\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">video<\/span><\/b><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, chewing one small piece of gum at your own pace may only <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/27928114\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">burn<\/span><\/b><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> about three calories an hour, which would approximate the calorie content of the sugar-free gum itself. However, chewing off the calories of a piece of <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">sugar-sweetened<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> gum might take all day. What about the purported appetite-suppressing effect of all that chewing, though?<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233279&quot;:true}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\"> <img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-98391\" src=\"https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2023\/11\/2-24.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1080\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2023\/11\/2-24.png 1920w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2023\/11\/2-24-960x540.png 960w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2023\/11\/2-24-1024x576.png 1024w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2023\/11\/2-24-768x432.png 768w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2023\/11\/2-24-1536x864.png 1536w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2023\/11\/2-24-480x270.png 480w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2023\/11\/2-24-1200x675.png 1200w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2023\/11\/2-24-720x405.png 720w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2023\/11\/2-24-540x304.png 540w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1920px) 100vw, 1920px\"\/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The results from studies on the effects of chewing gum on hunger are all over the place. For example, as you can see in the graph below and at 2:50 in my <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/video\/how-many-calories-do-you-burn-chewing-gum\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">video<\/span><\/b><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, one <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/28733151\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">showed<\/span><\/b><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> decreased appetite, another <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/23954409\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">showed<\/span><\/b><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> no effect, and yet another even <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/2359769\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">showed<\/span><\/b><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> significantly <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">increased <\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">hunger in women after chewing gum. The more important question, though, is whether there are any changes in subsequent calorie intake. Again, the findings are mixed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-98393\" src=\"https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2023\/11\/2-50.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1080\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2023\/11\/2-50.png 1920w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2023\/11\/2-50-960x540.png 960w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2023\/11\/2-50-1024x576.png 1024w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2023\/11\/2-50-768x432.png 768w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2023\/11\/2-50-1536x864.png 1536w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2023\/11\/2-50-480x270.png 480w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2023\/11\/2-50-1200x675.png 1200w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2023\/11\/2-50-720x405.png 720w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2023\/11\/2-50-540x304.png 540w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1920px) 100vw, 1920px\"\/><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">One study, as you can see in the graph below and at 3:12 in my <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/video\/how-many-calories-do-you-burn-chewing-gum\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">video<\/span><\/b><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, even <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23557811\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">found<\/span><\/b><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> that while chewing gum didn\u2019t impact M&amp;M consumption much, it did appear to decrease the consumption of <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">healthy<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> snacks. Interesting, but the researchers used mint gum, and the healthy snacks included mandarin orange slices. So, that may have just been an orange juice-after-tooth-brushing effect. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233279&quot;:true}\"> <img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-98395\" src=\"https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2023\/11\/3-12.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1080\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2023\/11\/3-12.png 1920w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2023\/11\/3-12-960x540.png 960w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2023\/11\/3-12-1024x576.png 1024w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2023\/11\/3-12-768x432.png 768w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2023\/11\/3-12-1536x864.png 1536w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2023\/11\/3-12-480x270.png 480w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2023\/11\/3-12-1200x675.png 1200w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2023\/11\/3-12-720x405.png 720w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2023\/11\/3-12-540x304.png 540w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1920px) 100vw, 1920px\"\/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">It can <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1111\/j.1745-459X.2005.00017.x\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">take<\/span><\/b><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> an hour before the residual taste effect of mint toothpaste dissipates. This is bad if it cuts your fruit intake, but what about harnessing this power against Pringles? An international group of researchers <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/27663531\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">had<\/span><\/b><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> people eat Pringles potato chips for 12 minutes, interrupting them every 3 minutes to swish with a menthol mouthwash. As you can see in the graph below and at 3:50 in my <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/video\/how-many-calories-do-you-burn-chewing-gum\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">video<\/span><\/b><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, compared to those in the control groups (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/27663531\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">swishing<\/span><\/b><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> with water or nothing at all), the minty mouthwash group cut their consumption by 29 percent. Even if a little tweak like chewing gum can affect the consumption of a single snack, your body could just compensate by eating more later in the day.
