For some that sentence brings a smile to their face as they think of snowfall, holidays, and cozy nights by the fireplace. Others dread the slushy roads, darkness, and frigid temperatures. And for a significant portion of the population, those winter blues get in the way of their everyday functioning, a condition known as seasonal affective disorder (SAD).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychiatry.org\/patients-families\/seasonal-affective-disorder\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"mbg-track-event\" data-track-event-types=\"click\" data-track-type=\"article-link\" data-track-prop-element-id=\"in-body-link\" data-track-prop-label=\"page_type | element_id\" data-track-prop-category=\"Link\" data-track-prop-link=\"https:\/\/www.psychiatry.org\/patients-families\/seasonal-affective-disorder\" rel=\"noopener\">Five percent of the U.S. adult population<\/a> suffers from full-blown SAD,\u201d psychiatrist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.normanrosenthal.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"mbg-track-event\" data-track-event-types=\"click\" data-track-type=\"article-link\" data-track-prop-element-id=\"in-body-link\" data-track-prop-label=\"page_type | element_id\" data-track-prop-category=\"Link\" data-track-prop-link=\"https:\/\/www.normanrosenthal.com\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Norman Rosenthal, M.D.,<\/a> shares on this episode of the <a href=\"https:\/\/podcasts.apple.com\/us\/podcast\/the-mindbodygreen-podcast\/id1246494475\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"mbg-track-event\" data-track-event-types=\"click\" data-track-type=\"article-link\" data-track-prop-element-id=\"in-body-link\" data-track-prop-label=\"page_type | element_id\" data-track-prop-category=\"Link\" data-track-prop-link=\"https:\/\/podcasts.apple.com\/us\/podcast\/the-mindbodygreen-podcast\/id1246494475\" rel=\"noopener\">mindbodygreen podcast.<\/a>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Rosenthal was actually the first scientist to describe seasonal affective disorder (and develop light therapy as an effective treatment). He declares the key to combating the winter blues is to prepare during autumn\u2014aka, right about now.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Below, find some of his top tips to prevent seasonal depression and proactively care for your mental health, no matter the time of year.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><!--\/$--><\/div>\n<div id=\"\"><!--$--><\/p>\n<div end=\"false\" class=\"sc-11rlt5o-4 dblBVm\">\n<p>Prepare now for the impending darkness, says Rosenthal. \u201cWe don&#8217;t realize the extent to which our houses have become dark by winter,\u201d he explains. \u201cThe hedges have overgrown the windows and need to be trimmed back, the windows have developed a layer of grime from the summer, which needs to be cleaned off\u2026\u201d Try to introduce more light to your space however you can early on.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Better yet, \u201cHave at least one room that&#8217;s your \u2018bright room,\u2019\u201d he shares. Perhaps it has a bunch of windows, and maybe you adorn the walls with a light coat of paint. Rosenthal also recommends investing in extra light fixtures for that room if you don\u2019t have them already. Make designing this room a fun activity you look forward to!\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPrepare for winter when you don&#8217;t need to,\u201d he shares. That\u2019s what it means to <em>prepare, <\/em>anyway. After all, it\u2019s cold, wet, and dark\u2014not the best atmosphere to venture out for social plans.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But social connections are crucial to well-being! That\u2019s why he encourages you make proactive social plans <em>before <\/em>winter to take you through the season. \u201cGet your social calendar up and running,\u201d he says. \u201cSay, \u2018Listen, I have trouble [making plans] in the winter. If I don&#8217;t call you in a week or two, would you just give me a buzz?
