Their account, which now has more than 27,000 followers, features their massive vintage Halloween collection, which consists of 250-plus pumpkin pails and blow molds. \u201cHalloween has always been something I&#8217;ve been able to look forward to and hold onto during the hardest times in my life,\u201d they say, \u201cso, I just wanted to find that comfort and magic every day.\u201d And it turns out, they&#8217;re far from alone. A holiday once reserved for a single night of dressing up in costume has evolved into a cultural and commercial phenomenon for reasons much deeper than a scary getup might suggest.<\/div>\n<p>According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/nrf.com\/media-center\/press-releases\/halloween-spending-reach-record-122-billion-participation-exceeds-pre\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/nrf.com\/media-center\/press-releases\/halloween-spending-reach-record-122-billion-participation-exceeds-pre\">National Retail Federation<\/a>, shoppers are expected to spend a record $12.2 billion on Halloween this year, exceeding last year\u2019s record of $10.6 billion. Lush Cosmetics also offers a<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lush.com\/us\/en_us\/c\/halloween\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.lush.com\/us\/en_us\/c\/halloween\">Halloween collection<\/a>, which launched in 2009 with just four products, and has since grown to more than 30 limited-edition items. \u201cWe\u2019ve seen a significant increase in Halloween sales over the past three years, with the range jumping from seven percent to 17 percent of our total sales during its period of availability,\u201d says Julia Hamfelt, managing editor for Lush Cosmetics North America. Indeed, particular HomeGoods items that went viral on the platform this year\u2014like a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@lordhuxleyandfamily\/video\/7253493991411322154\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@lordhuxleyandfamily\/video\/7253493991411322154\">ghost blanket<\/a> and a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@b_macabre13\/video\/7263670331288702251?q=cauldron%20diffuser&amp;t=1696838204427\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@b_macabre13\/video\/7263670331288702251?q=cauldron%20diffuser&amp;t=1696838204427\">cauldron diffuser<\/a>\u2014sold out well before the leaves yellowed.<\/p>\n<p>But the influence of social media on Halloween culture isn&#8217;t exactly new; millennials (ages 27 to 42) have been <a href=\"https:\/\/nrf.com\/blog\/evolution-halloween-3-trends-watch\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/nrf.com\/blog\/evolution-halloween-3-trends-watch\">curating costumes via Pinterest and documenting Halloween shenanigans on Facebook, Instagram, and Snapchat<\/a> for years. As they continue to be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.retaildive.com\/news\/millennial-gen-z-halloween-spend\/634204\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.retaildive.com\/news\/millennial-gen-z-halloween-spend\/634204\/\">the generation spending the most on Halloween<\/a> and driving its growth, psychology experts suspect that it isn&#8217;t <em>just<\/em> social media hype driving their interest and investment. A hefty dose of nostalgia could be behind the rising allure of Halloween, too.<\/p>\n<h2>Understanding the nostalgic appeal of Halloween<\/h2>\n<p>According to psychologist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lemoyne.edu\/Academics\/Our-Faculty\/Psychology\/Krystine-I-Batcho\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.lemoyne.edu\/Academics\/Our-Faculty\/Psychology\/Krystine-I-Batcho\">Krystine Batcho, PhD<\/a>, whose current research focuses on nostalgia, the millennials at the forefront of the Halloween craze are at a pivotal time in life for nostalgia. \u201cResearch has shown that nostalgia is prominent during early adulthood, when a person has left childhood behind and has taken on the responsibilities of adulthood,\u201d she says. \u201cTrading off the carefree innocence of childhood for the burdens of independence can create considerable uncertainty and anxiety, which nostalgia can help alleviate by reviving feelings of security and comfort from an earlier time in life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Given that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/kidulting-nostalgia\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/kidulting-nostalgia\/\">nostalgic memories are often centered on happy childhood experiences<\/a> and social traditions, it makes sense that millennials would experience particular nostalgia around Halloween, says Dr. Batcho. The costume aspect just fuels that nostalgic fire. Dressing up is a way to \u201csuspend reality to explore fantasy and the feeling of adopting a different identity,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>There may be something especially joyful or freeing about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/costuming-queer-identity\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/costuming-queer-identity\/\">getting to be whomever you want on Halloween<\/a>\u2014particularly for millennials, many of whom spent their formative years in a post-9\/11 world and entered the workforce in the wake of the 2008 financial crisis, during the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.<\/p>\n<p>The current state of the world isn\u2019t exactly pleasant, either; and the resulting sense of unease and uncertainty could also have millennials <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/psychology-of-nostalgia\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/psychology-of-nostalgia\/\">embracing nostalgia<\/a> en masse, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yu.edu\/faculty\/pages\/lasaleta-jannine\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.yu.edu\/faculty\/pages\/lasaleta-jannine\">Jannine Lasaleta, PhD<\/a>, an associate marketing professor at Yeshiva University who studies the connection between nostalgia and consumer behavior. \u201cMillennials are consuming these [Halloween] things that reflect their childhood [as a way to add] some stability to such an unstable world,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cMillennials are consuming these [Halloween] things that reflect their childhood [as a way to add] some stability to such an unstable world.\u201d \u2014Jannine Lasaleta, PhD, associate marketing professor at Yeshiva University<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>It doesn\u2019t hurt that these same millennials may have more buying power right now than they\u2019ve ever had, adds Dr. Lasaleta. Many are at a point in life when they can, for example, \u201cgo to Halloween parties, and pay for their own parties in a way that they couldn\u2019t when they were kids,\u201d she says. And according to her <a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/272594075_Nostalgia_Weakens_the_Desire_for_Money\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/272594075_Nostalgia_Weakens_the_Desire_for_Money\">research on nostalgia and consumer spending<\/a>, the nostalgic element of Halloween may make it that much easier for millennials to part with their money for spooky expenditures, too (hence, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/opinion\/articles\/2023-10-21\/home-depot-s-12-foot-skeleton-filled-a-halloween-need\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/opinion\/articles\/2023-10-21\/home-depot-s-12-foot-skeleton-filled-a-halloween-need\">popularity of a $300 12-foot skeleton<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, \u201cnostalgia is also associated with greater optimism, reaching out to others, and a greater sense of meaning and purpose,\u201d says Dr. Batcho, which could explain the appeal of Halloween as something around which millennials tend to bond and find community.<\/p>\n<p>In 2014, Ivonne Garcia, an artist in San Diego, CA, started a Halloween-themed Facebook group to share \u201ccode orange\u201d finds with close friends. The members post photos of spooky items at stores like HomeGoods, World Market, and Trader Joe\u2019s. While the group has grown, it is still small and private compared to other Halloween groups on Facebook. And Garcia says that\u2019s for a reason: Members like to support one another\u2019s shopping endeavors directly. \u201cI\u2019ve done it, and people have done it for me, where if you find something that I\u2019ve posted about wanting, I\u2019ll send you money to send it to me,\u201d says Garcia.<\/p>\n<p>Moon, the spooky influencer, shares a similarly positive sentiment on being a part of the year-round Halloween scene. \u201c[It\u2019s the] people who make it a fun and positive experience and create a real community where we&#8217;re uplifting and supporting one another,\u201d they say.<\/p>\n<p>That feels especially salient now in the wake of a pandemic that, for years, kept many of us from plenty of everyday pleasures and the company of others. \u201cI think the pandemic gave people a lot of perspective about finding joy in things,\u201d says Garcia. \u201cIf I want to buy pajamas that have, like, the Disney Villains on them, I&#8217;m going to because life is fleeting, and I want to enjoy things without judgment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Much in the same way, Halloween is the ultimate little (or big) treat for the nostalgic millennial.
