Between sprinting and shoulder pressing and dead lifting, the boot camp\u2013style workout at Barry\u2019s, which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.barrys.com\/barrys-turns-25\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.barrys.com\/barrys-turns-25\/\">just celebrated its 25th birthday<\/a>, is the apex of high-intensity struggle and euphoria. So what do you do if you\u2019ve got a Barry\u2019s or other high-intensity workout on the agenda, but you\u2019re just feeling draggy and low energy? How do you find the balance between listening to your body\u2019s needs, and knowing that finding that workout motivation and getting moving will ultimately, probably, make you feel better?<\/div>\n<p>It\u2019s a quandary that even Barry\u2019s global CEO <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/joeygonzalez\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/joeygonzalez\/?hl=en\">Joey Gonzalez<\/a> faces. And it&#8217;s one of the reasons Gonzalez says that Barry&#8217;s classes start with the reminder, \u201cDon\u2019t be a hero, and go at your own pace.\u201d The message is that you\u2019re here for you, not to perform for someone else, so stay in tune with what you have to give, which can vary from day to day.<\/p>\n<p>For Gonzalez, approaching a high-intensity workout is less about pushing through low-energy moments, and more about preparation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s vital to know your body, its rhythm, and when you might feel most energetic,\u201d Gonzalez says. \u201cFor example, I know that if I don\u2019t work out prior to 2 or 3 pm, it\u2019s going to be a struggle bus. But preparation can help with workout motivation, too.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKeep a journal of the moments you decide to move your body during the most challenging times as a reminder of how much better it made you feel,\u201d Gonzalez says.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, give yourself permission to perform in a different way every day, and acknowledge that a win as a win in whatever form it takes. These strategies can help get you through the moments when you want to move, but just don\u2019t feel like going all out.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhether you\u2019re feeling low energy or just not in the best state of mind, celebrate the fact that you showed up and are doing something great for your body,\u201d Gonzalez says. \u201cThe endorphins you get from exercise will no doubt impact your day in a positive, sometimes even euphoric way, and you\u2019ll be better off as a result of it. So don\u2019t be too hard on yourself and accept whatever level of performance you might be capable of that day.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Common modifications you can take if you want to show up, but aren\u2019t sure you want to show out<\/h2>\n<p>When your workout motivation is lacking, knowing you have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/exercise-modifications-for-beginners\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/exercise-modifications-for-beginners\/\">some modifications<\/a> in your tool belt to take things a little easier on yourself could help.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Instead of running, try a brisk power walk. It can deliver many of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/running-vs-walking\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/running-vs-walking\/\">the same cardiovascular, brain, and overall health benefits<\/a> as a run.<\/li>\n<li>Take the plyometrics (jumps) out of a floor move. For example, turn jump squats into bodyweight squats, jumping jacks into step touches, and skater bounds into curtsy squats. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/low-intensity-vs-low-impact-workouts\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/low-intensity-vs-low-impact-workouts\/\">Low impact doesn&#8217;t necessarily equate to low intensity<\/a>, but it may be a more approachable place to begin.<\/li>\n<li>Do any moves that involve a plank position\u2014such as a burpee, push-up, or mountain climber\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/incline-push-ups\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/incline-push-ups\/\">at an incline<\/a>, placing your hands on a bench or other elevated surface instead of on the floor.
