Even if you have one or both copies of the APOE4 gene, it doesn\u2019t mean that you will develop Alzheimer\u2019s, and not everyone with Alzheimer\u2019s has a copy of APOE4.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alz.org\/media\/documents\/alzheimers-facts-and-figures.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"mbg-track-event\" data-track-event-types=\"click\" data-track-type=\"article-link\" data-track-prop-element-id=\"in-body-link\" data-track-prop-label=\"page_type | element_id\" data-track-prop-category=\"Link\" data-track-prop-link=\"https:\/\/www.alz.org\/media\/documents\/alzheimers-facts-and-figures.pdf\" rel=\"noopener\">Alzheimer\u2019s Association<\/a> also emphasizes the relationship between APOE4 and Alzheimer\u2019s is the strongest in white, European-descended populations. And according to new research, that association is not as well established for other populations.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want to honor that watching a loved one suffer through dementia of any type is heart-breaking and traumatic,&#8221; says Mushtaq. \u201cI have experienced this both as a neurologist taking care of patients with memory loss, and by watching my beloved maternal grandmother suffer from dementia.
