{"id":8057,"date":"2023-10-10T19:12:45","date_gmt":"2023-10-10T12:12:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/loudhdtv.com\/?p=8057"},"modified":"2023-10-10T19:12:45","modified_gmt":"2023-10-10T12:12:45","slug":"what-is-the-best-diet-for-preventing-colon-cancer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/loudhdtv.com\/?p=8057","title":{"rendered":"What Is the Best Diet for Preventing Colon Cancer?\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">What would happen within just two weeks after swapping the diets of Americans with those of healthier eaters?<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Colon cancer <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/25919227\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">is<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> our second leading cancer killer, but some places, like rural Africa, have more than ten times lower rates than we do in the United States. How do we know it isn\u2019t genetic? \u201cMigrant studies, such as those in Japanese Hawaiians, have <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">demonstrated<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> that it only takes one generation for the immigrant population to assume the colon cancer incidence of the host western population.\u201d The change in diet is considered \u201cmost probably responsible for this,\u201d but all sorts of changes occur when you move from one culture to another. \u201cFor example, cigarettes, chemicals, infections, and antibiotics might be equally responsible for the change in colon cancer risk.\u201d You don\u2019t know if it\u2019s the diet until you put it to the test.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">It\u2019s rare that I do a whole video on a single study, but I think you\u2019ll agree the one that I cover in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/video\/the-best-diet-for-colon-cancer-prevention\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">The Best Diet for Colon Cancer Prevention<\/span><\/b><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> is worth it. An international group of researchers was trying to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/25919227\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">figure<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> out why colon cancer rates were an order of magnitude higher in African Americans and Caucasians in the United States than in rural South Africans. As you can see below and at 1:09 in my <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/video\/the-best-diet-for-colon-cancer-prevention\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">video<\/span><\/b><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, if you <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/17182822\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">look<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> at American colons, they\u2019re a mess with polyps and diverticulosis, not to mention hemorrhoids, whereas the African colons were \u201cremarkably pristine.\u201d And more importantly, the Africans had sevenfold lower colonic epithelial proliferation rates, a characteristic of precancerous conditions. The researchers measured everything the study participants were eating and concluded that the higher colorectal cancer risk and proliferation rates in African Americans were most closely \u201cassociated with higher dietary intakes of animal products and higher colonic populations of potentially toxic hydrogen [acid] and secondary bile-salt-producing bacteria.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-97105\" src=\"https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2023\/10\/1-09.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1080\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2023\/10\/1-09.png 1920w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2023\/10\/1-09-960x540.png 960w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2023\/10\/1-09-1024x576.png 1024w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2023\/10\/1-09-768x432.png 768w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2023\/10\/1-09-1536x864.png 1536w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2023\/10\/1-09-480x270.png 480w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2023\/10\/1-09-1200x675.png 1200w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2023\/10\/1-09-720x405.png 720w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2023\/10\/1-09-540x304.png 540w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1920px) 100vw, 1920px\"\/><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">When put to the test, higher rates of colon cancer were indeed found to be <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/25919227\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">associated<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> with higher intake of animal protein and animal fat, lower fiber consumption, more of those bad bile acids, less of those good short-chain fatty acids like butyrate, and higher mucosal proliferation. But how do we know the diet is what\u2019s mucking things up? We don\u2019t\u2014until an interventional study is performed.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">How about we just swap their diets? Feed the Americans a high-fiber African-style diet, and give the rural Africans the standard American diet. On day one of the experiment, the rural Africans were given sausage and white flour pancakes for breakfast, a burger and fries for lunch, and some meatloaf and white rice for supper, whereas the African Americans ate fruits, vegetables, corn, and beans. To help with compliance, the researchers included some more familiar foods like veggie dogs. Note, though, that it was not a vegan diet, just generally plant-based. They only swapped for two weeks. Could changes be seen that fast? Indeed, the dietary changes \u201cresulted in remarkable reciprocal changes\u201d in the lining of the participants\u2019 colons in terms of cancer risk and their microbiome. Switching to a more plant-based diet boosted their fiber fermentation and suppressed their carcinogenic bile acid synthesis. The researchers <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">took<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> biopsies and looked under a microscope at the colon lining of African Americans. Before the diet swap, their colon lining was in overdrive with rapidly dividing cells, a sign of premalignancy that is a risk factor for cancer. But, after just two weeks of eating a healthier diet, their colons calmed right down. You can see some before and after pictures below and at 3:07 in my <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/video\/the-best-diet-for-colon-cancer-prevention\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">video<\/span><\/b><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. The brown dots in the <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">before<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> photo for the African Americans represent dividing cells. In the <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">after<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> photo, they\u2019re nearly gone. Each of the brown dots represents an inflammatory cell. In the African Americans, there <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/25919227\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">was<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> rife inflammation on their typical diet that calmed way down after just two weeks on a healthier one, and the opposite happened for the rural Africans who switched to the standard American diet.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233279&quot;:true}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-97111\" src=\"https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2023\/10\/3-44.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1080\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2023\/10\/3-44.png 1920w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2023\/10\/3-44-960x540.png 960w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2023\/10\/3-44-1024x576.png 1024w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2023\/10\/3-44-768x432.png 768w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2023\/10\/3-44-1536x864.png 1536w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2023\/10\/3-44-480x270.png 480w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2023\/10\/3-44-1200x675.png 1200w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2023\/10\/3-44-720x405.png 720w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2023\/10\/3-44-540x304.png 540w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1920px) 100vw, 1920px\"\/><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">We know that when our friendly flora ferment fiber, they produce beneficial compounds like butyrate, which is anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer. \u201cImpressively, \u2018Africanization\u2019 of the diet\u201d more than doubled butyrate production, increasing total quantities, \u201cwhereas \u2018westernization\u2019 reduced quantities by half.\u201d And in terms of toxic metabolites, there was a significant drop in the healthier diet, whereas the \u201cmeatloafy\u201d standard American diet increased the levels of these carcinogens by 400 percent within just two weeks. So, the bottom line is that just by changing the food you eat, you can remarkably change your risk.
