The problem is that we\u2019re eating meat-sweet diets, \u201ccharacterized\u00a0by a high intake of animal products and sugars, the use of preservatives, and a low intake of plant-based foods, such as fruits, vegetables, and whole grain cereals.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Contrary to the fermentation of the carbohydrates that make it down to our colon, where the fiber and resistant starch <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26811603\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">benefit<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> us through the generation of magical short-chain fatty acids like butyrate, when excess protein is consumed, \u201c<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">microbial <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">protein<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> fermentation generates potentially toxic and pro-carcinogenic metabolites involved in CRC,\u201d colorectal cancer. So, what we eat can <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26811603\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">cause<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> an imbalance in our gut microbiome and potentially <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26840037\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">create<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> \u201ca \u2018<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">recipe<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u2019 for colorectal cancer,\u201d where a high-fat, high-meat, high-processed food diet tips the scale towards dysbiosis and colorectal cancer, as you can see below and at 1:04 in my video <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/video\/best-foods-for-colon-cancer-prevention\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Best Foods for Colon Cancer Prevention<\/span><\/b><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">. It\u2019s <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">called<\/span> <i><span data-contrast=\"none\">food<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\">, which can \u201crapidly and reproducibly\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/24336217\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">alter<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> the human gut microbiome. Why do levels go up? Below and at 2:22 in my <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/video\/best-foods-for-colon-cancer-prevention\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">video<\/span><\/b><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">, you can <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26196489\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">see<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> a graphic of our bacterial tree of life and how it\u2019s being depleted. Why is this happening? It <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/27079516\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">is<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> because of \u201cThe Fiber Gap.\u201d \u201cA low-fiber diet is a key driver of microbiome depletion.\u201d Sure, there are factors like antibiotics, cesarean sections, and indoor plumbing that have contributed to the gut microbiome diversity decline, but \u201cthe only factor that has been empirically shown to be important is a diet low in microbiota-accessible carbohydrates (MACs),\u201d not Big Macs. That\u2019s just a fancy name for fiber found in whole plant foods and resistant starch found mostly in beans, peas, lentils, and whole grains.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-97091\" src=\"https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2023\/09\/2-22.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1080\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2023\/09\/2-22.png 1920w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2023\/09\/2-22-960x540.png 960w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2023\/09\/2-22-1024x576.png 1024w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2023\/09\/2-22-768x432.png 768w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2023\/09\/2-22-1536x864.png 1536w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2023\/09\/2-22-480x270.png 480w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2023\/09\/2-22-1200x675.png 1200w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2023\/09\/2-22-720x405.png 720w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2023\/09\/2-22-540x304.png 540w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1920px) 100vw, 1920px\"\/><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Our intake of dietary fiber and whole plant foods \u201cis negligibly low in the Western world\u201d when compared to what we evolved to eat over millions of years. \u201cSuch a low-fiber diet provides insufficient nutrients for the gut microbes,\u201d which leads not only to the loss of bacterial diversity and richness but also to a reduction in the production of those beneficial fermentation end products that they make with the fiber. We are, in effect, \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25156449\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">starving<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> our microbial self.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">What are we going to do about the \u201cdeleterious consequences\u201d of a diet deficient in whole plant foods? <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26840037\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Create<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> new-fangled \u201cfunctional foods,\u201d of course, and supplements and drugs\u2014prebiotics, probiotics, synbiotics. Think how much money there is to be made! Or, we can just eat the way our bodies were meant to eat, but what kind of value is <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">that<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\"> going to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/28870704\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">earn<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> your stockholders<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">? Don<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u2019t you know probiotic pills may be \u201cthe next big source of income\u201d for Big Pharma?\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Why eat healthfully when you can just have someone else eat healthfully for you, then get a fecal transplant from a vegan? Researchers compared the microbiomes of vegans versus omnivores and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25431456\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">found<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> the vegans\u2019 friendly flora were churning out more of the good stuff, showing that a plant-based diet may result in more beneficial metabolites in the bloodstream and less of the bad stuff like TMAO. But while the impact of a vegan diet on what the bacteria were making was large, \u201cits effect on the <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">composition<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> of the gut microbiome [was] surprisingly modest.\u201d The researchers only found \u201cslight differences between the gut microbiota of omnivores and vegans.\u201d Really? \u201cThe very modest difference between the gut microbiota of omnivores relative to vegans juxtaposed to the significantly enhanced dietary consumption of fermentable plant-based foods\u201d was a shocker to the researchers. The vegans were eating nearly twice the fiber. Can anyone guess the problem here? The vegans just barely made the <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">minimum<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\"> daily intake of fiber. Why? Because Oreos are vegan. Cocoa Pebbles are vegan. French fries, Coke, potato chips. There are vegan Doritos and Pop-Tarts. You can eat a <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">terrible<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\"> vegan diet.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Burkitt showed that we need to get at least 50 grams of fiber a day to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25919227\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">prevent<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> colon cancer, a<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">nd that\u2019s only half of what our bodies were <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/19857053\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">designed<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> to get. We evolved getting about 100 grams a day, which is the amount you <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/27916707\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">see<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> in modern populations immune to epidemic colorectal cancer. So, instead of feeding people a vegan diet, what if you just fed people <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">that<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\"> kind of diet, one centered around whole plant foods?
